Finally, a 'W' for Waechter as Rays pound Jays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Doug Waechter finally knows what it's like to win again.

Waechter won for the first time since August and Damon Hollins hit a three-run homer during a five-run fifth inning to help the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Blue Jays 10-5 on Sunday.

"This is big for him, I know he feels a lot better about it," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "You sleep better. Food tastes better. It all happens after your first win in a while."

Waechter had gone 0-8 with seven no-decisions during that span.

"It's nice to know that the team won, not just me getting the win," Waechter said.

Waechter (1-4) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings, winning for the first time since Aug. 27.

Despite losing the finale, the Blue Jays have won four straight series.

"We just won another series," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "We'll go ahead and take the travelling road show to the next stop."

The Devil Rays hit three homers off Gustavo Chacin (6-2) in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Toby Hall and Russell Branyan had consecutive solo shots before Hollins' three-run home run.

"It's good to come out and knock some balls around, and score some runs on a team like that," Hollins said.

Hollins is 5-for-9 with two homers against Chacin.

Chacin gave up six runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He has allowed 13 homers in 48 1/3 innings.

"I started missing my spots," Chacin said. "That's what happened. I started leaving the ball over the middle, up in the zone. They didn't miss my mistakes."

Julio Lugo had a three-run homer in a four-run seventh that extended the Tampa Bay lead to 10-5. The Devil Rays have hit 71 homers in 57 games, including the four on Sunday.

"I think the air conditioning was blowing out to center," Maddon said.

Blue Jays third baseman Troy Glaus left in the fifth with a lower back injury, three innings after shortstop Aaron Hill ran into him while the pair were chasing Aubrey Huff's pop foul down the left-field line. Glaus was limping after the play, but stayed in the game for two more at-bats.

"It's stiff. It's sore," Glaus said. "I don't know. It was bad enough that I couldn't continue today. I guess we'll see tomorrow."

Frank Catalanotto hit a two-run homer and Bengie Molina had an RBI single to put the Blue Jays up 3-0 in the first. Alex Rios made it 4-0 with a fourth-inning run-scoring double.

Chacin retired 10 in a row before Hollins lined a one-out single to left in the fourth. After Jonny Gomes walked, Ty Wigginton had an RBI double to cut the Tampa Bay deficit to 4-1. Toronto avoided further damage when Catalanotto caught Huff's fly in left and then threw Gomes out at the plate.

Eric Hinske hit a seventh-inning solo homer for Toronto.

Notes

  • Maddon's mother, Beanie, saw her first Devil Rays' game in person.
  • Tampa Bay LF Carl Crawford (sore left knee) was out of the lineup for the third consecutive game. He is expected back Monday.
  • Catalanotto has a season-high eight-game hitting streak.
  • Devil Rays 2B Tomas Perez singled in the seventh to snap an 0-for-21 slide.
  • Branyan's homer was the 100th in his big league career. His last five hits have been home runs.
  • Molina has a season-best seven-game hitting streak.
