TORONTO -- The Detroit Tigers made their hits count against Ted Lilly.

Brandon Inge and Marcus Thames homered to help Zach Miner earn his first major league win, and Detroit defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 Saturday despite managing only three hits.

Lilly (5-7) had a season-high 12 strikeouts, but lost his third straight start. He is 1-5 in his last six outings.

"That's just a weird loss for someone to get, striking out 12, only giving up three hits," Inge said. "I bet there's just a couple of pitches he wants back. We took advantage of the only mistakes he made today."

After Lilly walked Thames and Chris Shelton in the second, Inge hit a three-run homer. Maggilo Ordonez reached on third baseman Shea Hillenbrand's error in the fourth before Thames hit a two-run shot to give Detroit a 5-0 lead.

Ordonez doubled in the ninth for the Tigers' other hit.

Asked if it was the best he's pitched this season, Lilly said: "Right now I'm looking at it as a loss. I threw well toward the end but by the time I got it going it was too late."

Lilly allowed five runs -- four earned -- and three hits in a season-high 8 2/3 innings.

"That's a tough one to describe when you look at the summary of that baby," Toronto manager John Gibbons said.

The Tigers improved to 12-3 when facing a left-handed starter, second-best in the majors behind the Yankees (14-3).

"Five runs on three hits is good production," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.

Lyle Overbay and Troy Glaus homered for the Blue Jays.

Miner (1-1) yielded two runs and four hits in six innings. He lost his first major league start on Sunday against Boston.

"It's unbelievable," Miner said. "It's real satisfying to pitch good against a team that good."

The Blue Jays rallied for a 10-5 victory Friday night after trailing 5-2 in the eighth, but there was no comeback this time as Roman Colon and Todd Jones completed the six-hitter. Jones pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 20 chances, retiring Alex Rios with two on to end it.

Jones took the loss Friday and said he couldn't fall asleep until 4:30 a.m.

"I slept like a baby, but when I woke up every two hours I was crying," he quipped. "That's the quote of the year by the way. Unfortunately, I had to be the one saying it."

Overbay's two-run homer in the fourth cut Detroit's lead to 5-2. Glaus made it 5-3 with his solo shot off Colon in the eighth.

Notes

Lilly has struck out 10 or more eight times in his career. He was one shy of tying a career high. ... Miner allowed three runs and seven hits - including two homers - in four innings of an 8-3 loss to Boston last Sunday.
