Izturis' double helps Angels avoid sweep by Giants

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Los Angeles Angels have been waiting for the kind of timely hit Maicer Izturis provided.

Manager Mike Scioscia found it refreshing that Izturis came through in the clutch -- when everybody who knows the Angels counts on Garret Anderson, Orlando Cabrera or Vladimir Guerrero to be the offensive spark.

Izturis hit a tiebreaking, three-run double off the wall in left in the eighth inning, and the Angels avoided a three-game sweep by the San Francisco Giants with a 6-3 victory Wednesday.

"Izzy gave us a big hit and a big lift," said Scioscia, whose club has been desperate to improve its run production. "We did things better today. With guys in scoring position, we got some big hits, two-out hits."

Juan Rivera hit a go-ahead two-run homer to left in the sixth but the Giants tied it the next inning when Barry Bonds entered as a pinch hitter with runners on the corners and no outs and grounded into a double play that allowed Pedro Feliz to score the tying run from third.

Fans jumped to their feet and chanted "Barry! Barry!" and the slugger emerged from the dugout to rousing applause.

Scot Shields (4-4), working for the seventh time in the Angels' last 11 games, pitched two innings for the win as the Angels ended a three-game losing streak. Francisco Rodriguez recorded the final three outs for his 17th save.

Feliz hit an RBI double in the second and Todd Greene followed by singling in a run, and Mark Sweeney added two hits and scored a run for the Giants, who hadn't played the Angels in the regular season since San Francisco lost to Los Angeles in the seventh game of the 2002 World Series.

"We won the series, and that's something we need to think about," Sweeney said.

Feliz doubled again to start the seventh, Greene then singled to advance Feliz, who scored on Bonds' groundout. The Giants won the first two meetings of this series after losing three in a row last weekend at Seattle.

"This is a tough team to sweep," Giants manager Felipe Alou said. "They played some baseball today. They hit, they pitched, they picked up the ball and they stole some bases."

Noah Lowry, making his first career appearance against the Angels, allowed nine hits and three runs in six innings, struck out one and walked one. He has only one victory in eight starts since beating the Houston Astros on May 8 in his first outing back from the disabled list. The left-hander was sidelined for a month with a strained muscle in his right side.

"I started the game and my velocity was down," Lowry said. "It's been that way since I got hurt. I don't know why, whether it's part of the healing process or not."

Rivera singled and Kendry Morales was intentionally walked by Jeremy Accardo (0-1) with two outs in the eighth, then pinch-hitter Mike Napoli was walked to bring up Izturis, whose bases-clearing double that gave him a career-best matching three RBI.

"After he walked Napoli on four pitches, I knew I was going to get a pitch to hit, so I was ready," Izturis said through an interpreter.

Jeff Weaver struck out seven to move within two of the 1,000 mark but saw his winless stretch reach four starts since he beat the Minnesota Twins on May 30.

"Tell Weaver, my bad," Shields said. "I'm scared to talk to him. ... He deserved a lot more than a no-decision."

Bonds received most of the day off, giving him two days to rest considering the Giants have an off day Thursday before hosting the Oakland Athletics in a weekend interleague series beginning Friday night.

Omar Vizquel swiped second in the eighth for his 350th career stolen base.

The Angels are 2-4 through their first six games of a 15-game stretch against the NL West and improved to 2-7 overall against the National League in 2006.

Cabrera reached base for the 50th consecutive game with an infield single in the first. Guerrero, who ended an 0-for-16 stretch Tuesday night, then flied out to center and Steve Finley threw out Cabrera at second for an inning-ending double play.

  • INF Kevin Frandsen rejoined the Giants after being recalled from Triple-A Fresno after Tuesday's game. He will provide depth at all of the infield spots. Feliz has played every inning this season and Alou knows he will need a day off soon.
  • Jason Ellison started in LF for the Giants in place of Bonds and batted leadoff. He saved a run in the sixth when he made a great throw to get Morales at the plate.
  • Weaver is 14-5 in 30 career interleague appearances.
  • Anderson, in an 0-for-11 stretch, received the day off.
  • The Giants drew 40,900 for their eighth sellout of the year and second in a row. All three weekend games with the A's are sold out.
