Devil Rays 3, Marlins 1

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

MIAMI, Fla. -- Casey Fossum cooled off the Florida Marlins.

Fossum pitched five strong innings to help the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat Florida 3-1 on Wednesday night, ending the Marlins' eight-game home winning streak. The Marlins had won 13 of their last 16 games. They have won eight series in the last 11.

Fossum (3-3) allowed one run and three hits. He walked five and struck out two to beat Florida for the first time. Brian Meadows pitched the ninth for his third save.

"I didn't feel too sharp," Fossum said. "It was hot and humid and I was sweating a lot but I hung in there and tried to keep them off balance and let the guys behind me make the plays."

Scott Olsen (6-4) gave up four hits and two runs in six innings. He walked three and struck out four in an unsuccessful bid to win his fifth consecutive decision. The Marlins had won Olsen's last six starts.

"I thought I was good tonight," Olsen said. "I didn't have very good control of my slider so I had to rely on my change-up to bail me out. We were down two before we had a chance to bat. I wanted to hold them right there."

Tampa Bay took a 3-1 lead in the seventh on Jorge Cantu's RBI single off reliever Matt Herges.

Julio Lugo was 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs.

"I'm just seeing the ball real well right now and being patient," Lugo said. "You get on a roll."

Trailing by one run in the sixth inning, the Marlins loaded the bases against Jae Seo with one out. But Mike Jacobs flew out to left and Damon Hollins threw out Jeremy Hermida at the plate. Seo had been acquired along with catcher Dioner Navarro from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday for Toby Hall.

"With the game being so close I had a feeling they were going to go for it," Hollins said. "My catcher (Navarro) did a great job of getting the ball back to the plate and making the play."

Navarro took the throw and reached out to tag Hermida just as he crossed the plate.

"It was a great play at the plate," Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It was a big point in the game. It's not one of the most conventional ways to turn two but we'll take it."

Florida also blew a chance to score in the fourth. With runners on first and second and one out, Alfredo Amezaga popped up. The infield-fly rule was called but when the ball fell among three fielders between the pitchers mound and the first base line, both runners ran. Wes Helms was tagged out standing on third base to complete a double play.

"Wes didn't hear the umpire make the call," Marlins manager Joe Girardi said. "You're looking at the ball, not the umpire. The runners advance at their own risk. It was a strange play that happens once in a while."

Tampa Bay took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Lugo led off with a single and scored when left fielder Josh Willingham slid and fell attempting to field Cantu's line drive that got lost in the lights.

"I picked up the ball until it was about 15 feet away then I just stuck my glove up to where I thought it was," Willingham said.

Ty Wigginton drove in Cantu with a single.

The Marlins made the score 2-1 in the second on Olsen's first career hit and RBI. Helms doubled with two outs and scored on Olsen's single to right. It was his first hit in 24 at-bats.

Olsen had won his last four decisions and the Marlins had won in his last six starts. ... Jacobs did not start due to a sore right ankle but pinch hit in the sixth inning. ... Navarro played his first game since suffering a bruised right wrist on May 4 and went 0-for-2 with two walks. ... 2B Dan Uggla pinch hit in the ninth inning and grounded out to third. He had missed the last seven games with a hamstring injury.
