22nd homer by Glaus extends Blue Jays' win streak

CBS wire reports

TORONTO -- Eric Hinske has played an increasingly more important role for the Toronto Blue Jays in Alex Rios' absence.

Hinske and Troy Glaus homered in the sixth inning to help Toronto beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 on Saturday for the Blue Jays' season-high fifth straight victory.

Hinske, who homered in his second straight game, finished 2-for-2 with two walks in place of Rios, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list after the game because of a serious infection in his left leg.

Center fielder Vernon Wells is also day-to-day with a strained left hamstring

"With Vernon and Rios out the guys on the bench have to step up," Hinske said. "It's good to get a chance to step in and help the team win."

Hinske lost his platoon job in right after Rios got off to a strong start. He's played sparingly since.

"He's been huge," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "It's a tough role to fall into but when the opportunity came back he responded."

Glaus led off the sixth with his 22nd homer, a solo shot off Cory Lidle (4-7) that went into the second deck in left. Hinske later added a two-run shot giving Toronto a 3-0 lead.

Toronto moved a season-high 12 games over .500.

Ty Taubenheim pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out four and walking two. He returned to the rotation after a stint in the bullpen. Lidle matched Taubenheim's scoreless effort until the sixth inning.

Scott Downs (2-0) pitched an inning for the victory. Closer B.J. Ryan pitched 1 2/3 innings for his 22nd save in 23 chances.

"If you take a poll of the guys he's been our biggest acquisition," Toronto's Reed Johnson said. "We've had problems in the past with closers, but he comes in and pumps in strikes. It's been huge for us."

Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley each had an RBI for the Phillies, who have lost 17 of 21.

Rollins' RBI triple off Justin Speier and Chase Utley's run-scoring off Scott Schoeneweis cut it to 3-2 in the seventh.

"You at least expect to the balls to find holes once in awhile but it just hasn't happened," Rollins said.

But Gregg Zaun's RBI single off the wall in right and Glaus' run-scoring double play restored the three-run lead in the bottom half of the inning.

"We're just not playing ball like we can. It's just a small margin of error," Lidle said.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons visited Rios in the hospital on Saturday. Rios, who likely will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, fouled a ball off his leg during Tuesday's 6-0 victory over the Washington Nationals and the area swelled. He sat out Wednesday's game as a precaution but the pain got worse Thursday, causing the team to send him to the hospital. The team is waiting to hear from doctors before deciding whether to DL him. CF Vernon Wells is day to day with a strained left hamstring, so a roster move to add another outfielder is likely.
