Hudson hits walk-off home run in marathon game against Dodgers

PHOENIX -- Another marathon night, another victory for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Orlando Hudson hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 15th inning to give the Diamondbacks a 9-7 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

The five-hour, six-minute triumph came 10 days after the Diamondbacks played a club-record 18 innings and five hours, 21 minutes in a 2-1 victory at Colorado.

"It had the same type of feel," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "It's frustrating because we had so many opportunities and left so many men on base. But we kept grinding, and it's a big win."

Brandon Lyon (2-3), the game's 15th pitcher and eighth for Arizona, threw two scoreless innings to get the victory. Aaron Sele (7-5) pitched the 3 2/3 innings for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers lost their fourth straight, but maintained a one-game lead in the NL West over the San Diego Padres, who lost 13-5 at Colorado. Arizona snapped a four-game skid and is three back.

Lyon walked in his first major league plate appearance with one out in the 15th. Eric Byrnes popped out, then Hudson -- who had doubled twice -- hit Sele's 3-2 pitch, a curve ball, 417 feet to center above the home run line.

"I'm not a home run hitter," Hudson said. "That's not my game. I was hoping to put it in play. The baseball gods did that tonight."

Conor Jackson was 4-for-6 and reached base seven times for the Diamondbacks, who tied a club record by leaving 21 runners on base.

J.D. Drew hit a pair of homers to drive in three runs, then singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the 11th inning to put the Dodgers up 7-6. He narrowly missed a third home run with a shot to the left field wall in the 14th.

But the Diamondbacks tied it with their third unearned run of the game in their half of the 11th as Los Angeles closer Takashi Saito blew a save for only the second time 16 tries.

Rafael Furcal led off the Dodgers' 11th with a single, then stole second -- his 31st stolen base of the season. He scored when Drew singled to right.

Saito walked Jackson to start Arizona's 11th. First baseman Nomar Garciaparra couldn't handle third baseman Wilson Betemit's throw on Stephen Drew's sacrifice bunt for an error. Jackson went to third on the play, then scored on Carlos Quentin's sacrifice fly to tie it at 7-7.

"That was a great game out there tonight," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "We made a couple of mistakes defensively, but we came out of the gates swinging. It was just one of those nights where we needed to score a few more than we did."

Arizona loaded the bases with one out in the 13th and 14th, but couldn't score.

J.D. Drew's homers, both with two outs, helped the Dodgers take a 6-3 lead after four innings, but the Diamondbacks rallied to tie it with single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth to deny Greg Maddux his 330th career victory.

Maddux, who got a no decision, is 1-9 lifetime against Arizona. He allowed four runs, two earned, on 10 hits in five innings. He said he had no idea why he struggles so against the Diamondbacks.

"I guess they just match up good against me, I don't know," he said, "but I didn't pitch very good tonight."

Luis Gonzalez doubled twice for Arizona to give him 540 for his career, tied for 23rd with Joe Medwick and Dave Winfield on the career list.

J.D. Drew hit a solo homer in the first and a two-run shot in the third, both off Claudio Vargas, for his 11th career multi-homer game and second this season, both at Chase Field. Russell Martin, 1-for-21 on the road trip up to that point, also homered for the Dodgers.

Notes

  • Byrnes set a career high with his 18th stolen base of the season.
  • Maddux failed to strike out a batter in his shortest outing since June 4 against St. Louis.
  • J.D. Drew has 14 home runs this season, tied with Garciaparra and Betemit for most on the team.
  • The Dodgers are 1-7 in extra-inning games this season, Arizona 6-4.
  • The Dodgers went 17 innings against Oakland on July 17.
