CLEVELAND -- Six months into the season, the Kansas City Royals are finally feeling at home on the road.

Jorge De La Rosa pitched five solid innings and Emil Brown homered to help Kansas City beat the Cleveland Indians 6-2 Wednesday night as the Royals gained their first road series sweep in more than three years.

"We've been playing a lot better in all areas," Royals manager Buddy Bell said after Kansas City's ninth win in its last 15 road games gave them a 24-50 record away from home. "It's nice to see."

Shane Costa had three hits for the Royals, whose modest two-game winning streak gave them a road sweep for the first time since taking three in a row July 11-13, 2003 at Texas. Their 86 consecutive series without a sweep was the third-longest streak in history, two behind the Montreal Expos in 1995-98. The Washington Senators went 100 series without a sweep in 1901-05.

"We're creating more of our own breaks by being aggressive," Brown said. "We're making plays in the field, but the big thing is the pitchers are giving us a chance. We can score, but if they give up 11, we still lose."

De La Rosa (3-2) allowed two runs, four hits and three walks in his first start in eight days. On Sept. 5, he held the New York Yankees to six hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 5-0 win before leaving with a blister near the nail on the middle finger on his left hand.

"It didn't bother me at all tonight," De La Rosa said. "I felt good and was able to battle for a few innings."

The Royals acquired the lefty from the Milwaukee Brewers on July 25 -- the day he came off the disabled list after missing more than six weeks with a similar blister.

"I've had it most of my career," De La Rosa said.

Three Royals relievers limited Cleveland to four hits over the final four innings.

"We got some pitches to hit, but didn't get it done offensively," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "The big part of bringing young kids up here is they have to learn to make adjustments from pitch to pitch and at-bat to at-bat. We didn't do a good job the last two days."

Grady Sizemore gave Cleveland a 1-0 lead in the third with his 24th homer. Cleveland then loaded the bases on a single and two walks, but got only Casey Blake's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

"That was probably the key right there, just giving up one," Bell said. "Casey just missed a hanging breaking ball or change."

The Royals tied it with a four-hit fourth against Jake Westbrook (12-10). Consecutive singles by Brown, Costa and Ryan Shealy made it 2-1. Joey Gathright later added an RBI single.

The Royals went 4-for-5 in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

David DeJesus singled and scored on a double to right by Esteban German, who was thrown out trying for third. Mark Grudzielanek then singled, took second on a groundout, and was thrown out by Blake trying to score on another single by Costa.

"I just didn't pitch very well," Westbrook said. "The defense bailed me out. They made it closer than it should have been."

Two more singles and an RBI fielder's choice by Gathright in the sixth made it 4-2.

Brown's 14th homer, a two-run shot off Rafael Betancourt, made it 6-2 in the seventh.

Westbrook allowed four runs and 11 hits over six innings. In his previous start Sept. 6, he also gave up 11 hits in six innings in a 3-2 loss to Toronto.

Notes

The game started seven minutes late after a thunderstorm drenched the field. ... The Indians honored Cy Buynak in pregame ceremonies. He is retiring after 45 years as a clubhouse manager in Cleveland. He threw out the first pitch to Royals manager Buddy Bell, who was one of his favorite Indians players in the 1970s. ... The Royals had a season-high four stolen bases. ... Indians OF Jason Michaels had his first career two-steal game.
