Colorado at Chicago

    Rockies 12, White Sox 4

    CBS wire reports

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Colorado's Aaron Cook pitched well, Chicago's Mark Buehrle and Jon Garland did not and Bobby Jenks left after three batters because of shoulder tightness. It was an eventful spring training opener for the Rockies and White Sox.

Bidding to become the Rockies' No. 1 starter, Cook allowed one hit in two scoreless innings Wednesday, and Colorado started the exhibition season with a 12-4 victory over the White Sox.

"I got some ground balls. I was able to get a couple of ground ball outs and a double play, so it showed my sinker is still working," said Cook, competing with Jeff Francis and Rodrigo Lopez to start Colorado's season opener.

Buehrle allowed four runs and six hits in the first two innings, while Garland gave up seven runs -- six earned -- and eight hits in the next two innings.

"Obviously, you want the results to be there. It is frustrating when you are hitting your spots and guys still get base hits, but I kept the ball on the ground," Buehrle said. "The results are not there, but I felt pretty good."

Brad Hawpe had three hits: a two-run double off Buehrle, and a double and a single against Garland.

"I was not hitting any spots. Everything was up. The sinker was not sinking," Garland said. "It is February. You can't win a game until April."

Colorado's Matt Holliday went 2-for-3 with a single and a two-run homer, while Garrett Atkins and Javy Lopez had two hits apiece.

Joe Crede and Juan Uribe had two hits apiece for the White Sox. Jenks threw nine pitches being taken out because of tightness in his right shoulder.

Jenks, who led the White Sox with 41 saves last year and was an instrumental part of Chicago's late season run to the 2005 World Series, was to be evaluated Thursday.

"There is no pain at all, no sharp pain, just one pitch where it caught right away," Jenks said. "That is why I called Ozzie out there. There is nothing wrong with it. It is just tight. I couldn't get the extension, and I can't accelerate through the ball because I have no range right now."

Jenks is in his second full-year with the White Sox. He said the tightness had been there since he arrived at spring training.

"Coming into camp there was a little tightness back there, but I have been working all spring to loosen the back of my shoulder. I had no internal rotation," Jenks said. "The combination of that and today using bad mechanics of dropping my elbow was not good. It caught the back of my shoulder and tightened it up, but there is nothing to worry about."

The right-hander, whose velocity reaches about 100 mph, hit Jayson Nix with a pitch and walked Ian Stewart, then left with a 2-0 count on Joe Koshansky.

"Every time his mechanics are not in the right place, he will be sore," Guillen said. "We have to monitor him really well and see how he feels. When you have closing mentality in the first game, and with the way the weather is, I got the feeling after the first couple of pitches I knew something was wrong."

Jenks worked out for nearly a half hour after being taken out, and said he just needed to stretch his shoulder more in the next few days.
