TUCSON, Ariz. -- Aaron Cook can focus on his secondary pitches because he already has a spot in Colorado's rotation. Dustin Nippert, however, is still trying to win a job with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Cook pitched five innings Monday, allowing three runs and eight hits during Arizona's 6-5 victory over the Rockies in 10 innings. The sinkerballer struck out one and did not walk a batter.
"I'm starting to build my innings up, which is a big part of this time of the spring," Cook said. "Still working on a lot of my other pitches."
Nippert helped his bid for a role at the back of Arizona's rotation by allowing one run and two hits in three innings. The 6-foot-8 right-hander walked three and struck out two.
"That's their decision to make, not mine," Nippert said. "The only thing I can do about it is go out there and pitch. I've got to do my job and they'll do theirs. Hopefully I can make it more difficult on them to make their decision."
Matt Miller drove in two runs with a bloop single in the seventh to put Colorado up 4-3.
Robby Hammock doubled home the go-ahead run for the Diamondbacks in the 10th.
Rockies reliever Darren Clarke left in the eighth with a strained right groin. Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (bruised wrist) returned to the lineup and grounded out in his only plate appearance.
Earlier in the day, the Rockies released catcher Javy Lopez.
