Easley homers to tie it in 10th before Mets score winner in 12th

NEW YORK -- Two backups came up big for the New York Mets, one with a long drive and the other with a deft bunt.

Pinch-hitter Damion Easley hit a tying homer with two outs in the 10th inning and Endy Chavez drove in the winning run with a beautiful bunt single in the 12th, giving New York a 2-1 victory Tuesday over the Colorado Rockies.

"This team is designed to have a lot of depth," said Mets outfielder Shawn Green, who started the decisive rally. "We've got a lot of guys who can do a lot of different things, and tonight was a perfect example."

After Colorado's Aaron Cook matched zeros with Orlando Hernandez for seven innings, slumping rookie Troy Tulowitzki broke a scoreless tie with a two-out RBI triple in the 10th off Billy Wagner.

Rockies closer Brian Fuentes retired his first two batters in the bottom half and was one strike from his fifth save when Easley drove a 2-2 pitch over the left-center fence for his fourth career pinch-hit homer. It was the first home run by a Mets pinch-hitter this season.

"He popped that ball," winning pitcher Joe Smith said. "Everybody in the bullpen went nuts."

Green drew a leadoff walk from Ryan Speier (0-1) in the 12th, advanced on Jose Valentin's sacrifice and moved to third on a balk when Speier stopped in the middle of his delivery.

"My foot just kind of slid from underneath me. It was either hold onto the ball or throw it away," Speier said.

After pinch-hitter David Newhan struck out and Jose Reyes was intentionally walked, Chavez dragged a perfect bunt to the right side on a pitch that was boring in on his shins. A desperate Speier tried in vain to shovel the ball to first, but the speedy Chavez beat it out easily and raised his arms as he crossed the bag.

"I knew the game was over," Chavez said. "After the first pitch I was watching the infielders. I saw that the first baseman and second baseman were playing back there, so I said I'm going to take a chance."

The crowd of 38,500 chanted "Endy Chavez! Endy Chavez!" for the reserve outfielder, a fan favorite especially after his incredible catch in Game 7 of the NL championship series last year.

"It's a great feeling," Chavez said.

Smith (1-0) got two outs for his first major league victory.

Wagner struck out the first two batters in the 10th before Yorvit Torrealba legged out a double. Pinch-runner Willy Taveras advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Tulowitzki drove a 3-1 pitch to the right-center fence between Carlos Beltran and Green.

"It's a big swing for him," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "It's a boost of confidence that he could use."

Tulowitzki, a touted rookie shortstop, was benched for the previous three games. He is hitting .197 with three extra-base hits and five RBI in 61 at-bats.

Most of Colorado's hitters have been unable to drive the ball this season. The Rockies (8-13), who have dropped five of six and 10 of 14, have not homered in seven straight games, a franchise record. They have only seven homers all year, at least three fewer than every other big league team and half as many as Alex Rodriguez alone.

"Feeling sorry for ourselves has never come into the picture," Hurdle said.

Colorado also lost for the 15th time in 16 games at Shea Stadium since 2003.

"We've got to find a way. We need to get a win and get out of here and regroup when we get home a little bit," Hurdle said.

Using a sharp sinker, Cook got 16 outs on groundballs. Meanwhile, El Duque set down 11 straight batters before Torrealba's two-out single in the seventh. He even retired Todd Helton on an eephus pitch to end the sixth.

"El Duque was dominant," Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca said. "He always has the breaking stuff there, but his fastball, he was spotting it on both sides of the plate. He was ultra tough."

Hernandez yielded four hits and two walks, fanning five. Cook allowed six hits and two walks, striking out two.

Hernandez has allowed no more than one earned run in four of his five outings. Cook is winless in five starts this year.

"It's still hard to walk away, 12 innings like that," Cook said. "We've got to know we could have done a couple of things better tonight."

Hernandez escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third when Garrett Atkins fouled out. Valentin hit a leadoff triple in the bottom half for the Mets but was stranded.

Notes

  • Mets 3B David Wright singled in the second inning to end an 0-for-15 slide that included eight strikeouts. He finished 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Hernandez doubled in the fifth, his second double and fourth hit in 13 at-bats this season.
  • Green bounced a base hit through the middle in the seventh and turned it into a double by hustling all the way. He caught CF Steve Finley napping and beat a late throw to second base.
  • Beltran turned 30.
  • Torrealba tried a delayed steal in the seventh but was thrown out by an alert Lo Duca.
