Rangers outlast Jays behind Blalock's 10th-inning sac fly

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

TORONTO -- Hank Blalock was grateful for a chance to make up for a costly ninth-inning error.

Blalock hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to lift the Texas Rangers to a 9-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

"I clanged that ball off my glove," Blalock said of his error that led to the tying run. "I was glad my spot came up where I could make up for it offensively."

Michael Young started the rally with a one-out double in the 10th, then stole third. Mark Teixeira walked and Sammy Sosa was given a free pass from left-hander Brian Tallet (0-1) before Blalock flied out to the warning track in center to drive in Young.

"I was just trying to drive something to the outfield to get that run across and give us the lead," Blalock said.

Akinori Otsuka (1-0) got the win despite giving up the tying run in the ninth. Joaquin Benoit worked the 10th for his first save, getting John McDonald to fly out to center with runners on first and second to end the game.

"We kept fighting and we finally got it done," manager Ron Washington said. "Those guys really fought hard today. I'm really pleased. You don't need these kind of games but when you play them it's certainly nice when you can win them."

The Rangers scored three runs against Jason Frasor in the ninth to take an 8-7 lead. Frasor, filling in for injured closer B.J. Ryan, blew his first save in three chances. Toronto's bullpen has blown six save opportunities this season.

Young led off with a single and Teixeira walked before Sosa struck out and Blalock flied out.

Ian Kinsler walked to load the bases and pinch-hitter Frank Catalanotto was hit by a pitch, scoring Young with the tying run. Brad Wilkerson followed with a two-run single that ricocheted off the glove of shortstop Royce Clayton.

"It was a grind," Frasor said. "It came down to walks and hit batsmen and I really screwed myself with that."

Toronto tied it in the bottom of the ninth against Otsuka.

McDonald reached on an infield single, Aaron Hill was safe on Blalock's fielding error and Clayton hit an RBI single to center.

"We booted that ball to put (Otsuka) in a bad situation and then it was a chopper over his head that let them score the tying run," Washington said.

Texas led 4-1 before the Blue Jays sent 10 men to the plate in a four-run sixth.

Frank Thomas led off with his 491st career home run. Lyle Overbay followed with a triple and scored on Troy Glaus' infield single.

Aaron Hill and Clayton struck out but Sal Fasano was hit by a pitch before Alex Rios' RBI single scored Glaus, who slid home under the tag of Gerald Laird.

C.J. Wilson relieved Kevin Millwood and issued back-to-back walks to Adam Lind and Vernon Wells to force in a run and give the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead.

The Rangers responded in the seventh. Teixeira led off with his second homer of the season and second in as many days.

"Pretty or ugly, you like to get a win like that," Teixeira said. "I'd like to win 5-0, 7-2 or something like that but at the same time, if you can scratch out a win like this it keeps that fight in you."

Teixeira went 3-4 and scored three runs. Laird homered and drove in three runs for the Rangers.

Lind hit a two-run home run in the eighth, his second. Lind also homered in Toronto's 5-3 loss Friday.

Glaus returned to the Blue Jays lineup for the first time since April 12 after missing 14 games with a bone spur in his left heel. He finished 1-2 with two walks.

Notes

  • The Rangers are 32-12 against Toronto since 2002.
  • Otsuka blew his first save in four chances.
