Phillies pounce on Tigers, close in on NL East lead

CBS wire reports

PHILADELPHIA -- The soft-tossing 44-year-old outpitched the hard-throwing rookie half his age.

Jamie Moyer allowed two runs in seven sharp innings and Aaron Rowand homered and singled in the go-ahead run to lead the Philadelphia Phillies over the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Saturday night.

Shane Victorino had three hits, including a solo homer, for the Phillies, who closed within two games of the NL East-leading New York Mets. They were 8½ games behind just two weeks ago.

"It's nice to be in contention, but we're not going to stop. We want to be division leaders," Victorino said.

Carlos Guillen and Curtis Granderson homered for the Tigers. Placido Polanco hit an RBI double off Antonio Alfonseca in the ninth and two runners were on before Alfonseca struck out Guillen and Ivan Rodriguez grounded out to end the game.

Moyer (6-5) allowed four hits in to earn his 222nd career win, tying Jerry Koosman for 15th on the career list for left-handers. Moyer relied on slow stuff as usual, mixing a fastball in the low 80s with a variety of breaking pitches to keep Detroit's potent offense off balance.

"He absolutely amazes me," manager Charlie Manuel said. "For him to be 44 years old and to be going strong, that's tremendous. He's a great teammate, a true professional and a great pitcher."

Tigers starter Andrew Miller (2-1) gave up four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits in six innings. A year after being drafted sixth overall, the 22-year-old Miller made his third start in the majors. The southpaw consistently threw in the 90s, though he battled some control problems. He walked three and hit two batters with pitches.

"He pitched a terrific game," Miller said of Moyer.

Moyer was glad to rebound from a poor outing against Kansas City last Sunday. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings after giving up six runs.

"Four days to sit on it isn't a lot of fun," he said.

Rowand's opposite-field drive to right tied it at 2 in the third inning. He drove in Victorino with a two-out single up the middle to put the Phillies ahead 3-2 in the fifth.

Chase Utley's sacrifice fly in the sixth gave the Phillies a two-run cushion. Abraham Nunez and Carlos Ruiz hit consecutive doubles with two outs in the seventh against Yorman Bazardo to make it 5-2. Ryan Howard added an RBI double off Wilfredo Ledezma in the eighth.

Guillen homered to left leading off the second to tie it at 1. Granderson hit one into the right-field seats to make it 2-1 in the third.

Miller pitched out of trouble after Victorino homered in the first to give the Phillies the lead. Utley followed with a shot that appeared to clear the right-center field fence, but it was ruled a double because a fan reached over the railing and caught it.

Miller then walked Howard and hit Rowand to load the bases, but Pat Burrell popped out and Nunez struck out looking to end the threat.

"He's just a baby," manager Jim Leyland said. "He threw the ball good. I was impressed."

The Phillies placed RHP Francisco Rosario on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. RHP Brian Sanches was called up from Triple-A Ottawa to take his spot. ... Six of the Phillies' seven homers in the first two games of this series have been solo shots. ... Victorino has a career-best seven homers. ... Moyer is tied for 67th overall on the career wins list. He improved to 11-7 against the Tigers. ... Phillies RHP Ryan Madson pitched a perfect eighth, striking out two. ... A crowd of 45,102 was the seventh sellout at Citizens Bank Park.
