PHILADELPHIA -- Jimmy Rollins is adjusting very nicely to his new spot in the lineup.

The shortstop had three hits and Kyle Kendrick tossed seven strong innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

The Phillies, winners in eight of their last nine, improved to a season-high six games over .500 (55-49) and swept the Pirates for the first time since 2001.

Nate McLouth homered for Pittsburgh, which fell to 2-13 since the All-Star break.

Rollins, who moved into the No. 3 spot in the lineup after All-Star Chase Utley went down with a broken hand, went 3-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to nine games.

"With injuries, you need someone to step in and pick things up. Jimmy has done that so far," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "He's been swinging the bat real good and doing a tremendous job lately."

He also had three hits on Saturday and has 15 three-hit games this season.

"It doesn't matter where I hit in the lineup, it never has," Rollins said. "We can't let injuries kill our spirit. We have to keep fighting."

The Phillies will have to deal with another injury after reliever Ryan Madson was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain that occurred during the game.

Madson said the injury is very similar to the one that sidelined Brett Myers. A close friend of Madson, Myers suffered his injury on May 24 and returned from the disabled list on Saturday.

"It's been bothering me for a few days but I thought I could throw through it," said Madson, who will have a MRI on Monday. "Brett has already given me advice on the injury."

Kendrick (5-1) allowed one run on six hits, walking one and striking out four. It was his first victory since July 13.

"He pitches with a lot of poise for a young kid. I like that," Manuel said. "He studies the game and is very prepared for each start."

Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Ian Snell (7-9). Newly acquired Tadahito Iguchi doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, Aaron Rowand doubled home Rollins for a 2-0 lead. The Phillies loaded the bases with one out but failed to break the game open. Snell fanned Greg Dobbs for the second out and shortstop Cesar Izturis robbed Carlos Ruiz of a hit with a nifty diving stop and flip from his stomach to second baseman Freddy Sanchez to end the threat.

Rollins tripled and scored on a Ryan Howard's sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Chris Coste, who hit a three-run homer on Saturday, drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single in the eighth. Coste had six RBI in two games.

McLouth broke up Kendrick's shutout in the sixth inning with a solo homer to right field. It was McLouth's third of the season.

Snell, who was 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA against the Phillies in his previous two starts, allowed three runs on six hits over six innings to lose for the fourth straight time. He struck out seven, including six in a row at one point, and walked three.

"Snell battled through six and did a nice job keeping us in the game," Pirates manager Tim Tracy said. "He was a little fast in his delivery, but hung in there."

Kendrick helped himself out of a jam in the seventh inning. Jose Castillo led off with a double but was stranded on third when Kendrick fielded two hard comebackers to the mound to end the inning.

"He came right at us and did a real nice job," said Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche, who went 1 for 3. "He had a real good sinker and was throwing strikes. He was impressive."

Iguchi had two hits in his second game since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

Notes

The game was delayed 12 minutes at the start because of rain. ... Rollins is hitting .583 (7 for 12) with two triples off Snell in his career. ... Kendrick was hit by a pitch in the fourth, increasing the Phillies' NL-leading hit-batsman total to 60. ... The Pirates finished 1-5 on their road trip. ... The Phillies recalled reliever Geoff Geary from Triple-A Ottawa to replace Madson.
