Uribe's rare grand slam breaks it open for ChiSox vs. Tigers

DETROIT -- The White Sox finally got the combination of power and pitching that has been so elusive this season.

Juan Uribe hit his third career grand slam, and Jermaine Dye and Josh Fields added solo shots as Chicago beat the Detroit Tigers 7-4 on Friday night.

Mark Buehrle (9-6) won consecutive starts for just the third time this year. He gave up three runs and seven hits in eight innings, striking out three and walking two -- a performance he said was better than his start Saturday against Toronto.

Buehrle shut out the Blue Jays on eight hits over eight innings.

"I felt a lot better today than I have in a while," he said. "I made a lot more pitches tonight that I did the last game."

And that, in turn, gave the White Sox some confidence.

"When you have a pitcher like that," manager Ozzie Guillen said, "you go out there and play good."

Dye is 27-for-84 with 10 homers, eight doubles and 18 RBI since the All-Star break. He became the first White Sox player with four extra-base hits in a game since Robin Ventura on July 19, 1991, when he hit two homers and had two doubles in Chicago's 13-9 victory over the New York Yankees on Thursday.

Detroit lost its third straight and ninth in 11 games.

"You have to be nasty to win," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "Right now we are a nice team who are getting their butts beat."

Andrew Miller (5-5) left the game after four innings with a mild left hamstring strain. The rookie left-hander suffered the injury on his last pitch of the fourth, and couldn't warm-up for the fifth inning. He was listed as day-to-day.

"The doctors say it is very mild and I should miss very little time," he said.

Miller gave up six runs and seven hits, with five strikeouts and a walk.

Dye gave Chicago a 1-0 lead when he lined Miller's 1-2 pitch over the left-field fence to lead off the second, his 22nd of the season.

The White Sox broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. The first four came on Uribe's grand slam, a high drive into the right-centerfield stands -- his 11th homer and first grand slam since last Sept. 24. The other run came on Andy Gonzalez's fielder's choice.

"I work with my hitting coach and that has helped me a lot, helped the team," said Uribe, who carries a .219 average.

Detroit cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth on Magglio Ordonez's two-run double and Mike Hessman's RBI single, but Fields responded with a two-out, solo homer to left in the ninth off Todd Jones.

Ivan Rodriguez's sacrifice fly off Ehren Wassermann scored Carlos Guillen, who had tripled. But Wassermann got Hessman to ground out to end it.

Before the game, Tigers infielder Neifi Perez was suspended 80 games for testing positive for a third time for a banned stimulant, a penalty that finishes his season.

Notes

  • Buehrle had been away from the team, tending to the birth of his first child and his grandmother's illness, since Saturday.
  • Detroit DH Gary Sheffield will undergo therapy and rehab for shoulder soreness and numbness in his right arm and hand. He is listed as day-to-day.
  • Chicago DH Jim Thome was out of the lineup after leaving Thursday's game against the Yankees with back spasms.
  • Tigers RHP Jose Capellan was optioned to Triple-A Toledo to make room for RHP Zach Miner, who returned from the bereavement list on Friday.
  • INF Alex Cintron was unavailable with the flu.
  • The Tigers are 26-22 at home this season.
