BRADENTON, Fla. -- Ian Snell helped get the Pittsburgh Pirates even with Ryan Howard.

A day after Howard boomed a home run off Pittsburgh's Bryan Bullington, the Philadelphia Phillies slugger was hitless Friday in a 5-4 win over the Pirates.

Snell started for the Pirates and pitched two scoreless innings. Howard went 0-for-3, including a groundout that ended the first inning.

"I own Ryan Howard now," Snell said with a big smile. "I love to face him. It's a challenge and we've had a good rivalry ever since we were starting out in the minor leagues in 2001."

Howard laughed when told of Snell's comments.

"I'd own myself, too, if I always quick-pitched myself," he said.

    Howard then turned serious.

"We have a unique relationship," he said. "Even though we're in different organizations, we played against each other every step of the way coming up through the minor leagues, and now we see each other in the major leagues. It's pretty neat."

Casey Smith hit a tiebreaking, solo home run with two outs in the Phillies ninth off Hector Carrasco. Smith also hit two doubles, including an RBI drive in the seventh.

Jack Wilson went 3-for-3 with a home run for Pittsburgh.

J.D. Durbin, competing for the open spot in the Phillies' rotation, allowed two runs and five hits in two innings. Gary Knotts got the win with two scoreless innings.

    Notes

Brett Myers, scheduled to be the Phillies' opening-day starter, allowed one run in three innings and got the win as the Phillies beat the Pirates 4-3 in a seven-inning "B" game. Myers gave up five hits, struck out three and walked none.
