PHOENIX -- Jon Garland has health, and time, on his side this spring.

Garland was sharp in his debut with the Angels, while Brewers slugger Prince Fielder bristled about his contract before the game but came to play, too, in Milwaukee's 4-2 victory over Los Angeles on Sunday.

Garland, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox for Gold Glove shortstop Orlando Cabrera in November, pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.

"The body's ready, it's pretty much just a matter of building up innings," said Garland, who won 18 games in 2005 and 2006 before falling to 10-13 last season. "There's plenty of time in spring training, plenty of games (to) just add on an inning here, add on an inning there. If I can get to six, seven by the end of the spring, I'm ready to go."

Garland said he's working hard to develop a rhythm with catcher Mike Napoli, and he liked the early results even though there are still some kinks to work out before the season starts.

"You can't expect to go a few games with each other and have everything worked out. That'll come over time," Garland said. "He'll get to know me a little better as a person and how I am when I'm in games."

Fielder finished 1-for-1 but was also hit twice by Angels relievers, once in the right knee and again on his right elbow pad. Earlier in the day, the Brewers renewed his contract for $670,000..

"I'm not happy about it at all," Fielder said. "But my time is going to come. It's going to come quick, too."

Fielder didn't let that affect him in the field. He made a circus play at first base in the third inning when his glove was knocked off of his hand by a sharply hit grounder. But he managed to scoop up the ball with both hands and hustle to first for the out.

"It knocked it right off," Fielder said.

Brewers starter Carlos Villanueva pitched two scoreless innings before giving way to left-hander Chris Capuano, who got the win. The Brewers had been on the losing end of his last 22 appearances last season.

Juan Rivera's RBI double and Napoli's RBI single through the hole at shortstop gave the Angels a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

But the Brewers answered in the bottom half off a two-run single by Abraham Nunez and an RBI single by Laynce Nix as Milwaukee took a 3-2 lead. Corey Hart had an RBI single in the fifth to cap scoring.

Reliever Henry Bonilla took the loss after allowing Nix's single. He came in for Chris Bootcheck, who plunked Fielder and was removed after three more pitches with a strained left oblique.

    Notes

Brewers RHP Scott Cassidy unexpectedly retired on Sunday. ... There was a moment of silence before the game for John F. Long, a philanthropist and developer who donated the land for Maryvale Baseball Park, the Brewers' spring training home. Long died Friday.
