TUCSON, Ariz. -- Ian Stewart was simply looking for a pitch to drive.

He hit it straight over the right-field wall to lift the Colorado Rockies to a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings on Monday.

"He left one up and I was able to hit it hard," Stewart said of his homer off Alex Hinshaw. "It's getting late in spring training so we'd like to get some wins under our belt and get used to winning."

The encouraging news for Colorado was that starter Aaron Cook pitched five innings with no pain. Cook was scratched from his last start because of a sore shoulder.

"I felt really good today," said Cook, who gave two runs, three hits and walked one. "I had the sinker working, it was down in the zone. I'm pretty happy."

Cook was especially pleased with his four strikeouts.

"They're never part of the plan," he said with a grin. "If they happen, they happen and I'll take them. I had a lot of movement on my ball today."

He said that was due to the fact he wasn't cutting loose with his pitches. He was only throwing his fastball at about 85-to-90 percent.

"It's kind of nice because I'm learning to pitch by laying off the throttle a little bit," Cook said. "It's more effective."

Colorado second baseman Jayson Nix made a strong push for the starting spot by going 3-for-3 with a home run, his third of the spring.

"If I get the right pitch, I can run into one and hit some homers," said Nix, who's battling with Jeff Baker, Marcus Giles, Omar Quintanilla and Clint Barmes to be the opening-day second baseman. "What is that, three homers now? I'm not that kind of home run hitter by any means."

San Francisco's Matt Palmer made his first Cactus League start, going five innings and giving up a run on four hits. He also struck out three.
