GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Victor Martinez hit two home runs, Fausto Carmona pitched two scoreless innings and the Cleveland Indians beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 Friday.

A two-time All-Star catcher, Martinez was limited to 73 games last season because of injuries. He pulled a hamstring running the bases on opening day, and pain from a lingering elbow injury forced him to have surgery in June.

Martinez returned in August, and wound up the year hitting .278 with only two homers and 35 RBI. That's why hitting two balls out of the park had Martinez smiling, even if it is late February.

"I'm enjoying it a lot," he said. "It feels great just to be on the field and healthy."

"It's not fun when you're hurt," he said. "After I hurt my hamstring, I couldn't get any drive with my legs. My elbow wouldn't let me do anything."

Martinez hit a two-run homer off Cha Seung Baek in the second inning. The second homer came off Mat Latos in the fourth, a solo shot that easily cleared the wall in right-center and nearly bounced out of Goodyear Ballpark.

Carmona started for Cleveland, allowing two hits. After going 19-8 in 2007, Carmona battled injuries and inconsistency last season, finishing 8-7 with a 5.44 ERA.

"He was aggressive on the plate," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "If he does that, good things are going to happen."

Baek, 6-9 with a 4.62 ERA last season, pitched the first inning.

"I felt good," he said. "I made one bad pitch. I hung a changeup. Other than that, I kept the ball down."

Baek figures he'll pitch two or three innings in his next start.

Kevin Kouzmanoff, traded by the Indians to the Padres following the 2006 season, hit a solo homer off David Huff in the fourth. Edgar Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with a double for San Diego.

The win was the first for the Indians in the Cactus League since 1992 when the team trained in Tucson. Cleveland held its spring training camp in Winter Haven, Fla., from 1993-2007.

    Notes

The Indians play Oakland in Phoenix on Saturday. RHP Carl Pavano will start for Cleveland. ... Padres C Henry Blanco has agreed to play for the Venezuelan team in the World Baseball Classic.
