SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Trevor Cahill lived up to his billing as a top pitching prospect for Oakland in his first spring training start Thursday.
The 21-year-old righty didn't allow a ball out of the infield in three innings and a split squad of Athletics beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2.
Cahill gave up a first-inning run on a bunt single by Andres Torres, two groundouts and a wild pitch. He finished his outing by striking out the side on fastballs in the third inning.
"I have to calm myself down," said Cahill, in major league camp for the first time. "Your body knows what's going on. I'm just trying not to do too much."
Cahill was a second-round draft choice in 2006, and won 11 games in each of the last two years in the minors.
Cahill induced six ground-ball outs and struck out three. He walked Rich Aurilia in the second inning but got out of the inning with a double play.
"Outstanding," Oakland manager Bob Geren said. "His ball really explodes. He has really good movement. Good sinker. Good slider. He's a very impressive young man."
New A's left fielder Matt Holliday doubled in a run in a run in a three-run second inning off Giants starter Joe Martinez, who also allowed a two-run single by Corey Wimberly.
Oakland second baseman Mark Ellis had an RBI single in the first inning. Martinez, given a start while No. 5 starter Jonathan Sanchez is with the Puerto Rican team for the World Baseball Classic, gave up four runs on five hits and two walks in two innings.
"He got his ground balls," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy. "We didn't play well behind him. A couple of ground balls got through and one we couldn't handle. He pitched better than his numbers."
Giants third baseman Jesus Guzman hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his second homer of the spring. He was signed as a free agent last winter after spending the 2008 season in the Oakland organization.
Notes
Oakland RHP Jared Lansford pitched a scoreless fifth inning. His father, Giants batting coach Carney Lansford, was not there to see it. Carney Lansford retreated to the Giants clubhouse during his son's appearance, in which he gave up singles to Steve Holm and Eugenio Velez before getting an inning-ending groundout. ... Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval (hamstring) was a late scratch from the starting lineup and is not likely to play Friday against the Los Angeles Angels, manager Bruce Bochy said. Sandoval, hitting .471, had homers in his previous two games. ... Tim Lincecum will make his third spring start Friday against the Angels.
