TUCSON, Ariz. -- Jon Garland is trying out new pitches this spring, which means one rocky outing won't bother him.
The Diamondbacks right-hander, working on developing a cutter and a curveball, was rocked for six runs and six hits in a 16-3 loss to the San Diego Padres on Monday.
"He is trying to develop more of a repertoire as opposed to mostly fastballs and sliders," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "He does throw some changeups, but adding a cutter and a curveball gives him more weapons."
They still need some work. Garland yielded a three-run homer to Eliezer Alfonzo and three doubles in 2 1/3 innings.
"I was just throwing a lot of fastballs and a lot of cutters, doing a lot that I wouldn't be doing during the season, (with) certain counts on certain pitches," Garland said.
Alfonzo finished with four RBI and Kevin Kouzmanoff went 3-for-4 with three doubles for San Diego.
While Garland struggled, Cha Seung Baek turned in a solid outing for the Padres. He allowed one run and one hit in three innings.
"It is early in the spring but I'm really trying to work more on my off-speed stuff," Baek said. "I probably pitched about 50 percent."
Miguel Montero hit a two-run homer for Arizona, and Mark Reynolds finished with two hits.
