New York at Baltimore

Yankees-Orioles DH on Saturday postponed to Sunday

BALTIMORE (AP) - The split doubleheader Saturday between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles has been postponed because of the expected bad weather associated with Hurricane Irene.

The afternoon game will be held on Sept. 8, previously an off day for both teams. The time of that game will be announced later.

The game originally scheduled for Saturday night will become part of a split doubleheader on Sunday. The first game is slated to start at 1:35 p.m., and the nightcap is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.

The decision infuriated Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who wanted to play a doubleheader in Baltimore on Friday, a request the Orioles denied.

"It's silly to me. I don't understand why we didn't play a split doubleheader today," Girardi said after New York lost to Baltimore 12-5 on Friday night.

"Someone has to step up. And they did it all over the country. They did it in Philadelphia, they did it in Boston, they did it in Florida. Football games have been moved up, soccer games, golf has been canceled. Why we didn't play a split today, I have no idea.

"Now they want us to give up the only off day that we truly have. We didn't agree to play September 8. They scheduled it, we didn't agree with it, and I really don't understand it.

"We're going to fight it."

New York and Baltimore will also play Monday night, a game already on the schedule.
