Rockies 6, Padres 3

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Jordan Pacheco has earned the right to play on a regular basis for the Colorado Rockies. His manager just has to figure out where the utilityman fits in.

Pacheco had two hits and two RBIs in the Rockies' 6-3 win over a San Diego Padres split squad on Wednesday.

"I like the versatility he gives us," Walt Weiss said. "Jordan consistently puts forth quality at bats, and we're going to have to get creative at times to get him to the plate."

Weiss likes Pacheco as a situational hitter, and doesn't think he'll end up with a permanent position.

The Rockies switched him to catcher in the minors and sent him down last season to learn how to play third base. To this point, nothing has stuck.

Last season, Pacheco batted .309 with 54 RBIs and five home runs in 132 games while playing catcher, first, second and third base.

"Jordan will get a chance to play often," Weiss said. "He's a professional hitter who's earned the right to be a big part of this team. He gives us a lot of options."

Everth Cabrera, front-runner to be the Padres starting shortstop, played seven innings as he re-acclimates after an offseason without winter ball. He had two singles and two runs scored as the leadoff hitter.

"I didn't play winter ball at all, and I didn't get as many big league at-bats as I would've like in 115 games last season," Cabrera said. "I need to play a lot this spring to get back into the swing of things. Winter ball normally takes care of my timing, but I'm having to work on it more now because I didn't play."

Pacheco wasn't the only Colorado mainstay to perform well. Third baseman Chris Nelson had two RBIs to pace Colorado's offense, which scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning, and catcher Wilin Rosario went 3 for 3 with a run scored.

Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt made is spring debut with a scoreless eighth inning. Starter Tyler Chatwood, a contender for the rotation's No. 5 spot, gave up two runs on five hits in three innings.

Troy Tulowitzki went 0 for 2, but Weiss was impressed with his defensive range and execution, which he took as positive signs that his star shortstop is recovering well from left groin surgery.

Padres right-handed pitcher Sean O'Sullivan started his second spring game and gave up one run and two walks in three innings. Padres catcher Nick Hundley had two hits with a double and an RBI.

NOTES: Padres LHP Clayton Richard, the likely opening-day starter, is scheduled to make his spring debut on Sunday. He should pitch two innings. . RHP Casey Kelly will start Friday, with RHP Freddy Garcia to follow. . LF Carlos Quentin still hasn't played in a spring training game, and manager Bud Black hasn't set a set date for him to do so. He had offseason right knee surgery and the team has been conservative with his rehabilitation.
