GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Aaron Harang knows that the numbers add up to a logjam. There are eight pitchers competing for five spots in the Los Angeles Dodgers' starting rotation.
Harang's bid continued Saturday in a rocky three innings in the Dodgers' 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners. In his second appearance this spring, he gave up two runs on six hits.
"Typical Aaron," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "He got rocked around a little bit there, but then he came up with zeros. He bends, but doesn't break."
His fastball, Harang said, sailed on him against the Mariners.
"Some of them were too elevated," said Harang, who in five innings of spring work has allowed six runs on 11 hits. "But that's what spring is for. I'll play some catch tomorrow. I'll do my bullpen the next day. It's all about trying to get that feel again."
With the offseason additions of Zack Greinke and South Korean left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu, Harang has been mentioned as pitcher whom the Dodgers might be willing to trade. He was 10-10 in 2012 with 3.61 ERA and is one of eight Dodgers pitchers with guaranteed contracts in 2013.
"I know how it works," Harang said. "It's not a surprise. But you pitch like you always do. Scouts and people are always watching. They're always there. But I've got to go out and not worry about that. Look, I've been in the major leagues for 12 years. They know who I am."
Alex Castellanos brought the Dodgers back from Harang's difficult start with a two-run homer in the seventh. He launched a pitch from Yoervis Medina to left field and into the Dodgers' bullpen.
Mariners starter John Garland, a right-hander sidelined in 2012 after rotator-cuff surgery on July 2011, gave up one run on two hits in three innings.
"It's coming around," Garland said. "The arm is definitely getting stronger with every inning. Between innings, it doesn't tighten up. It feels good."
NOTES: Dodgers star Matt Kemp went 0 for 3 and struck out twice. Coming back from shoulder surgery, he is 0 for 11 in spring training. Kemp's role as the designated hitter Saturday was the last time the Dodgers plan to use the DH this spring. The NL club's pitchers are expected to take their turns at bat, starting Sunday against Colorado. ... Greinke's next start is scheduled for Monday against Milwaukee. He was scratched from his last start Wednesday because of flulike symptoms. ... Adrian Gonzalez's two-run homer in Mexico's 5-2 victory over the U.S. team Friday in the World Baseball Classic got lot of cheers in the Dodgers' clubhouse. "Yeah, I like it," Mattingly said of his first baseman. "I wouldn't worry about Adrian."
