Rockies 10, Giants 4

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Matt Cain wasn't so worried about the runs. It was a lack of command that bothered him.

The Giants' opening day starter gave up four runs and seven hits, one a two-run homer to Willin Rosario, and the Colorado Rockies went on to beat San Francisco 10-4 Thursday night.

"My stuff was fine, but I made some bad mistakes, location-wise," Cain said despite not walking a batter in five innings and striking out eight. "I was looking to go out there and make good pitches, win the game, because it's coming down to the end (of the spring)."

Cain's last spring start before opening day against the Dodgers in Los Angeles is expected to come on Tuesday against the San Diego Padres.

One pitch he wanted to have back was the fastball to Rosario.

"He tried to surprise me high on my hands, but I surprised him," Rosario said of his second homer of the spring.

The Giants entered with a major league-leading 16 triples, but it was the Rockies who had three, including two off Cain by Josh Rutledge and Dexter Fowler. The Rockies had just five coming in.

Jonathan Herrera hit the third triple of the night off reliever Ramon Ramirez.

Left-hander Drew Pomeranz, making a bid for the No. 5 spot in the Colorado rotation, gave up three runs and 10 hits, walked two and struck out four in five innings.

Minor league infielder Ryan Cavan had a memorable night for the Giants.

He was inserted into the lineup at second base just before the first pitch when Marco Scutaro's back tightened up. He singled in the second, homered in the eighth inning off right-hander Chris Volstad, and had two RBIs.

NOTES: Rockies 1B Todd Helton appears to be finding his swing as opening day nears. He had a pair of hits and a walk, raising his average to .294. ... Rockies left-hander Jeff Francis, in a minor league game, went seven innings, throwing 82 pitches against Cubs youngsters and giving up two runs on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. He is due to start Colorado's home opener against San Diego on April 5. ... The Rockies have split squad games on Friday, against the Giants at home and the Texas Rangers on the road. ... Giants CF Andres Torres left the game after four innings with a strained foot and will be reevaluated on Friday. ... C Johnny Monell, INF Kensuke Tanaka and C Jackson Williams were reassigned to the Giants' minor league camp before the game.
