Diamondbacks 8, Mariners 4

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - After missing his last start because of a tired arm, Arizona Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley says his left arm feels fine following Arizona's 8-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Miley allowed four runs and six hits while throwing 63 pitches in 3 1-3 innings. Before Sunday's game, he had tossed just four innings this spring. His last outing was March 7.

"It feels great," Miley said." I thought I threw the ball well. I made a couple of bad pitches and paid for it. My fastball felt like it had life on it. I feel I will be ready."

Seattle starter Joe Saunders was hit hard, allowing eight runs, seven hits and four walks in five innings. He has an 11.57 ERA this spring.

Paul Goldschmidt was 2 for 2, hitting a two-run single in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth, Geraldo Parra added two hits and scored twice, while Aaron Hill drove in two for Arizona, which improved to 14-14-2 this spring.

Franklin Gutierrez homered leading off the game, and Kendrys Morales put Seattle ahead 4-1 with a three-run homer in the third. The Mariners have hit a major league-high 50 homers in spring training.

Arizona is hoping that Miley will be ready for opening day. If not, the club could go with four starters to start the season. The Diamondbacks won't need a fifth starter until April 9.

"I thought he threw the ball good. It was a good step, the next step forward," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "The next time around he will probably go 75 or 90 (pitches) and we will see how he feels. I don't worry about the results. If he is healthy he will be on the rotation."

This off season Saunders signed a one-year, $6.5 million contract with Seattle that includes a mutual option for 2014.

Last season in 28 starts with Arizona and Baltimore, the 31-year- old went 9-13 with a 4.07 ERA. The 2008 All-Star did finish 2012 strong, going 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in his last seven starts with the Orioles.

"I feel like I am right on track," Saunders said. "I felt like I was a little tired today, but my arm feels good. It is just that I am going through that point in this nice, long, five-month spring training. Just trying to get it over with and done."

NOTES: The Mariners signed outfielder Endy Chavez to a minor league deal Sunday. Chavez was Seattle's opening day starter in left field in 2009. The 31-year-old has a .260 batting average with 26 home runs and 100 stolen bases. Last season in 64 games with Baltimore, Chavez batted.203 with two homers. . Following the game Arizona reassigned veteran infielder Mark Teahen and right-hander Eddie Bonine to their minor league camp. ... Sunday's attendance, 12, 864, set a new single-game record at Salt River Field. It was the club's eighth straight sellout.
