Cubs 5, Padres 3 wire reports

CHICAGO -- Clayton Richard was a bit better than last time. Not enough to help the San Diego Padres extend their four-game winning streak, though.

Richard labored through 5 2/3 innings Monday night and the Chicago Cubs beat the Padres 5-3.

Richard (0-3) gave up five runs and seven hits, including two home runs. In his previous start, he allowed six earned runs in 1 2/3 innings in a loss to Milwaukee.

"It is [better], but I mean, games like this those things don't matter," Richard said. "When you don't win, you don't win. I wish I could have put us in a better position to win a baseball game and I wasn't able to do that, so that's all that really matters."

The Padres went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

"We just couldn't get the big knock. We got ourselves in position," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We drew some walks, had some hits, put stress on them. We didn't get the hit."

Scott Hairston and Cody Ransom each hit solo home runs in the second off Richard to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead. Darwin Barney added an RBI double to score Welington Castillo in the fourth.

Ransom and Barney, the Cubs' No. 7 and 8 hitters, were a combined 4 for 7 with four RBI.

"These guys are major league players and somebody's got to hit at the bottom of the order," Black said.

The Padres rallied in the fifth. They loaded the bases with two outs on a single by Everth Cabrera and walks to Carlos Quentin and Chris Denorfia, and Yonder Alonso hit a two-run single to tie it at 3.

Ransom hit a two-out RBI single in the sixth and Barney followed with an RBI double.

Cabrera got three hits and scored twice.

The Cubs have won five of seven since starting 5-13.

Michael Bowden (1-1) got the win in relief of Jeff Samardzija, who allowed three runs and four hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked four.

Kevin Gregg got his fourth save for a Cubs bullpen that has a 1.35 ERA in their past 12 games since April 18.

"For whatever reason, the guys are getting the job done and getting the big outs with whomever I bring out at the time," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "So that's the key, is to make the pitches when you need to."

Black said relievers Huston Street and Luke Gregerson were not available for Monday's game. Street and Gregerson had both pitched in San Diego's prior three games. ... Padres pitcher Tyson Ross will work in middle relief during his rehab appearance Tuesday with Triple-A Tuscon. Ross has been on the disabled list since April 20 with an impingement in his left shoulder. ... The Cubs acquired Ransom on April 16 off waivers from the Padres. Ransom was 0 for 11 with San Diego on the season. ... Samardzija's eight strikeouts on the night gave him 47 in the month of April, the second most by a Cubs pitcher for the month. Matt Garza is first with 51 in 2011.
