Travis Shaw was scuffling through his season at Triple-A Pawtucket when the Red Sox called him up in early August, and within days, he succeeded Mike Napoli as the team's starting first baseman. He showed few signs of the struggles he had in the minors and in a handful of plate appearances with the Red Sox earlier in the season. Shaw batted. 274 with 13 home runs in 226 at-bats, but that performance may have still earned him nothing more than a utility role or a trip back to the minors. It's also hard to trust his unexpected success in limited play, so even with a larger role, Shaw is an AL-only option at best.
