Ryan Zimmerman taking fielding practice in the outfield
Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has taken fielding practice in the outfield the past two days, according to The Washington Post.
While there's been no public statement about a position change from Zimmerman or the team, there's a sense that the organization is considering the idea. "We haven’t said anything to him," one Nationals official said. "But we’re watching him. Put him out there, let him go."
Zimmerman explained that he's just changing things up as he attempts to come back from a thumb injury. While taking grounders in the outfield isn't necessarily weird, Zimmerman has done it with an outfielder's glove. Two Nationals coaches brushed off the idea of a position change, saying Zimmerman was just getting in some "conditioning." A move would allow the team to utilize a superior infield defense. Anthony Rendon would remain at third, while Danny Espinosa would continue to patrol second.
