  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Nearing swinging workouts

Manager Bud Black said Thursday that Cron (back) is expected to begin taking swings soon, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Cron has moved along more slowly than expected in his recovery from a bout of lower-back spasms, which sent him to the 10-day IL exactly 10 days ago. A return in early June is the best-case scenario. Michael Toglia and Mike Moustakas have been sharing starts at first base in Cron's absence.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Yet to resume activities

Cron (back) has yet to resume baseball activities, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Cron has already missed a week of action with lower-back spasms but remains limited to just receiving treatment to this point. He'll be eligible for activation from the injured list later this week, but it sounds like it could be a while longer than that. Mike Moustakas and Michael Toglia have been handling first base in Cron's absence.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Goes on IL with back spasms

The Rockies placed Cron (back) on the 10-day injured list Monday, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. Cron departed Sunday's 4-0 win over the Phillies with back spasms and is now set to miss at least a week and a half of action. Mike Moustakas is starting at first base Monday against the Reds in Cron's stead, and Triple-A Albuquerque call-up Michael Toglia could also see time at the position while Cron is on the mend.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Likely to land on IL

Rockies manager Bud Black said after Sunday's 4-0 win over the Phillies that Cron (back) is likely heading to the injured list, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports. Cron left Sunday's game with back spasms, and it sounds like the first baseman will need at least a week or more to recover. In 35 games this season, Cron has slashed .228/.277/.426 with six home runs, 20 RBI and 19 runs. Mike Moustakas as well as Harold Castro could see reps at first base while Cron is out of the lineup. The Rockies likely won't make Cron's move to the IL official until shortly before Monday's game against Cincinnati.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Exits with back spasms

Cron was removed from Sunday's game against the Phillies due to back spasms, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports. Cron went 0-for-2 with an RBI prior to leaving Sunday's contest in the fourth inning. The severity of the issue remains unclear, and the 33-year-old should be considered day-to-day heading into Monday's series opener versus the Reds.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Tallies 19th RBI

Cron went 1-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI on Saturday against the Phillies. Cron drove in his 19th run of the season with a double in the third inning and later came around to score. He now has at least one hit in 10 of his last 13 games, also tallying nine RBI and eight runs scored in that span. Despite the strong stretch, Cron has maintained an underwhelming .231/.281/.433 line -- totaling a 76 wRC+ -- across 146 plate appearances on the campaign.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Getting breather Monday

Cron is out of the lineup Monday versus the Pirates, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Cron will head to the bench Monday as the Rockies start a three-game series in Pittsburgh. The 33-year-old has gone 4-for-20 with two doubles, two runs scored and six walks while striking out four times over six games in the month of May. Mike Moustakas will replace him at first base and bat sixth in the series opener with the Pirates.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Launches three-run homer

Cron went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and a double to go along with an additional RBI and run scored in Sunday's victory over the Diamondbacks. Cron had Ryne Nelson's number Sunday, tagging him for a double in the second inning before swatting a three-run homer in the third that plated Charlie Blackmon and Jurickson Profar. Cron's breakout performance was much needed considering the 33-year-old was 2-for-20 (.100) in his last five games. Though Cron is striking out at a 27.6 percent clip overall and holds just a .188 average against right-handed pitching this season, Cron has been significantly better versus lefties with a .300/.323/.467 slash line.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Receives Tuesday off

Cron is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Guardians. Cron appears to be getting a maintenance day after he started each of the Rockies' past five games and went 4-for-20 with a home run, a double, three runs and two RBI. Mike Moustakas will fill in for Cron at first base.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Goes deep in win

Cron went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run in a 5-0 win against the Phillies on Thursday. Cron gave the Rockies all the offense they ended up needing with his two-run shot to left field in the first inning. The homer was just his second across his past 15 games after he began the campaign with three long balls over his first three contests. Cron has gone deep at least 25 times in each of his past four full seasons, and with five so far in 2023, he appears primed to reach that total again.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Crushes two Opening Day homers

Cron went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double and five total RBI in Thursday's 7-2 win against San Diego. Cron was arguably the offensive standout of Opening Day, as he was the only player in the league to go deep twice. The veteran first baseman put the Rockies on the board with a first-inning single, gave the team a 4-2 lead with a fifth-inning three-run homer and went deep again with a solo shot in the seventh. Cron has hit 25-plut homers in each of his last four full seasons (excluding the shortened 2020 campaign), and he appears well on his way to putting up big power numbers again in 2023.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Back in spring lineup

Cron (back) will start at first base and bat cleanup in Sunday's split-squad Cactus League game against the Reds. Cron will check back into Colorado's spring lineup for the first time since March 14 after a bout with back spasms prompted the club to exercise caution with him over the past two weeks. The veteran first baseman apparently checked out fine after hitting high-velocity pitching Saturday, so the back issue shouldn't be anything that hinders him at the plate moving forward.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Hitting vs. high velocity machine

Cron will hit against a high velocity pitching machine before Saturday's Cactus League game, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. It's another step in the right direction for Cron, who has missed most of the spring while dealing with back spasms. The slugger also went through workouts Friday before the contest, and he appears to be on the right track towards getting on the field for the Rockies before Opening Day. A trip to the injured list to begin the season cannot be ruled out yet, however.

Cron (back) will go through a full workout Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Cron will taking batting practice and participate in fielding drills with his teammates. He's missed the last week of action with back spasms but is trending toward being available for Opening Day, provided he can avoid any setbacks in his recovery.

  • Rockies' C.J. Cron: Scuffling in spring

Cron has gone 5-for-29 with one home run, two doubles and nine strikeouts during Cactus League action. Cron is locked into the first base job in Colorado and has established a fairly clear baseline of performance for the last several seasons. That makes it difficult to be overly concerned by his lack of production this spring, particularly so long as he maintains his health.
