• Giants' Robbie Ray: Falters in sixth for tough loss

  Ray (0-1) took the loss against the Yankees on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four across 5.1 innings. He did not issue a walk. It was relatively smooth sailing through the first five innings of Ray's start Friday. That quickly changed in the sixth, when he yielded a two-run homer to Aaron Judge, and Ray ended up taking the loss after receiving zero run support from the Giants. It was still an encouraging performance out of the veteran southpaw, especially with the way he ended the 2025 regular season (8.33 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 27.2 innings across his final six starts of the year). Ray is projected to make his next start during the Giants' four-game home series against the Mets that kicks off Thursday.

• Giants' Robbie Ray: Fans eight in spring win

Ray earned his first win in his fifth Cactus League start, tossing 39 of his 64 pitches for strikes while cruising through five perfect innings. The veteran southpaw has allowed two runs on four hits and eight walks while striking out 15 across 14.2 innings this spring as he gears up for his 13th big-league campaign. • Giants' Robbie Ray: Will not make another start

  Ray is no longer scheduled to start Wednesday against the Cardinals and appears unlikely to pitch again this season, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The Giants were officially eliminated from playoff contention Tuesday, and Ray has already logged 182.1 innings in 2025 after missing most of the previous two seasons with injury, so he'll shut things down a little early. Ray was nearly untouchable until the Padres found some success in the seventh inning. Ray was close to taking a hard-luck loss, but Luis Matos' game-tying homer in the ninth inning spared him. Ray was strong, only allowing an RBI double to Freddie Freeman and a solo home run to Miguel Rojas in terms of damage, but the southpaw wasn't quite as sharp as Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who pitched seven scoreless frames. Since the start of June, Ray has allowed just 19 runs (16 earned) over 48.2 innings, good for a 2.96 ERA. Ray allowed two long balls -- solo homers to Romy Gonzalez and Ceddanne Rafaela -- in a start for the first time since his first appearance of the season at Cincinnati on March 30. Despite this unsteady performance, Ray remains one of the elite starting pitchers in the game.
