  • Steven Moya: Going overseas

Moya signed a one-year contract with the Chunichi Dragons of the Nippon Professional Baseball League in Japan, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.

Moya spent the entire 2017 season in the minor leagues within the Detroit organization, slashing just .166/.222/.344 during 46 games in Triple-A. He played in 31 big-league games in 2016, but wasn't able to make enough of an impression to warrant any more playing time in the majors.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Off minor-league DL

Moya (oblique) is back in action for Triple-A Toledo. He is hitting .169/.213/.359 with seven home runs and 57 strikeouts in 142 at-bats.

Moya, who cleared waivers at the end of spring training, used to be the definition of a Quadruple-A player, and now he is not even hitting at Triple-A. He does not figure to contribute in the big leagues anytime soon.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Out with oblique strain

Moya is on the 7-day DL at Triple-A Toledo with a left oblique strain.

After clearing waivers before the season, it's safe to say the 25-year-old power hitter's prospect stock has cratered. He was hitting .161/.196/.355 with five home runs and a horrendous 38:4 K:BB in 93 at-bats.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Clears waivers

Moya cleared waivers Friday and will likely be sent to Triple-A Toledo, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Moya seems to be on track to return to his 2016 role, serving as organizational depth for the Tigers' outfield. The lefty hit .284/.310/.501 with 20 home runs in Triple-A last season, but failed to truly transfer that success to the major-league level in various opportunities. After a dismal spring (.192/.208/.288) dampened any prospects of a roster spot, it seems Moya will once again be destined for an organizational depth role in 2017.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Placed on outright waivers

The Tigers placed Moya on outright waivers Wednesday, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports.

Moya looked as though he might be in position to see regular at-bats in right field to begin the season with J.D. Martinez (foot) bound for the DL, but the 25-year-old didn't inspire much confidence that he'd be a capable replacement after supplying a .192/.208/.288 batting line in 52 at-bats during spring training. Assuming Moya goes unclaimed off waivers, he'll report to Triple-A Toledo and will face an uphill battle to get back to the big leagues now that he's no longer a member of the 40-man roster. With Moya out of the picture, the Tigers appear set to rely on Mikie Mahtook and Tyler Collins as their primary options in right field until Martinez returns, provided they don't acquire another veteran outfielder before the start of the season.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Could get a look in right field to begin year

With J.D. Martinez out for 3-4 weeks and set to begin the season on the DL, Steven Moya is a candidate to play right field, Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reports.

Moya filled in for Martinez for a long stretch last season, but he struggled at the plate and in the field. The 25-year-old is not doing anything to earn the role this spring, as he's slashing just .186/.205/.233 with no home runs. The Tigers could decide to use Mikie Mahtook and Tyler Collins in right while giving prospect JaCoby Jones a shot in center. Moya is out of options, so if the Tigers try to send him down after spring training, he will have to pass through waivers.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Hitting well but not for power in spring training

Moya is 5-for-17 (.294) through seven spring training games, although he has just one RBI.

Moya is collecting hits, but he has just one double and no home runs so far. He's a less versatile defender than Dixon Machado, with whom he's likely competing for the team's final bench role, so Moya needs to make his mark as a power hitter. The 25-year-old is out of options, so if the Tigers try to send him down after spring training, he will have to pass through waivers.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Faces long odds to make 25-man roster

Moya, who is out of options, looks unlikely to make Detroit's 25-man roster this spring, The Detroit News reports.

The Tigers have a logjam in the outfield, with J.D. Martinez and Justin Upton entrenched as starters in the corners, and Tyler Collins and Mikie Mahtook likely to platoon in center. Backup infielder Andrew Romine can also play outfield, so it could come down to Moya or utility player Dixon Machado for the final bench spot. Machado, who is also out of options, is a bit more versatile defensively than Moya, which could give him the edge. If the Tigers attempt to send Moya down, he will have to pass through waivers.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: On bubble this spring

Moya is out of minor league options and could find himself on another team before the season begins, Lynn Henning of the Detroit News reports.

The Tigers don't trust Moya enough in the field and his bat isn't reliable enough for regular playing time. Because he is out of options, Moya will have to pass through waivers if the Tigers try to send him down. That means there's a pretty good shot that Moya's time in Detroit will come to an end sometime this spring.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Recalled from Triple-A

Moya was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.

As expected, Moya will return with Toledo's season drawing to a close Monday. The 25-year-old displayed impressive power in 26 games with the Tigers earlier this season, slugging .517, but he also fanned at a 35.8 percent clip. He will be shielded heavily from lefties and probably won't start over the likes of J.D. Martinez or Justin Upton against right-handed pitching very often.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Optioned to Triple-A Wednesday

Moya was optioned to Triple-A Toledo Wednesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

The 25-year-old outfielder had just been called up from Toledo on Tuesday. He failed to record a plate appearance in his two games with the club. Moya's slashing .299/.489/.788 in 79 games with the Mud Hens.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Recalled from Triple-A

Moya was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.

Moya will provide an extra bench bat with Miguel Cabrera nursing a biceps strain, although it's uncertain how long he'll be up. He could be a roster casualty when Erick Aybar, whom the Tigers acquired from Atlanta, ultimately joins the team. The 25-year-old Moya should be up for good when rosters expand but he may play primarily off the bench, as the Tigers are currently set at the corner outfield positions.

  • Tigers' Steven Moya: Optioned Saturday

Moya was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following Saturday's game.

After a callup June 17, Moya initially mashed (four HR, 1.218 OPS in eight games), but his bat has gone relatively silent since. In his past nine games, Moya was 3-for-26 (.115) with 15 strikeouts in 26 at-bats. His roster spot will be filled by Justin Upton, who will be reinstated off the bereavement list prior to Sunday's game.

Moya is not in the lineup for Saturday's matchup with Kansas City.

Moya will get the night game off as Mike Aviles gets the call in right field, batting sixth. Moya has yet to get it going in July, hitting 3-for-23 (.130) with 14 strikeouts this month.
