Tovar went 1-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base and two runs scored in Saturday's 10-7 win over the Mets. Tovar has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, though this was his first steal in that span. While his bat has been solid, he has just one RBI and four runs scored in that stretch, though it's tough to make an impact from the bottom of the lineup. The shortstop is slashing a modest .226/.274/.357 with two steals, three home runs, 20 RBI and 23 runs scored through 49 contests, and a 28.5 percent strikeout rate isn't helping his cause.... Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Game-winning hit
Tovar went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk Thursday against the Marlins. Tovar was the hero of Thursday's win, delivering a walk-off single in the ninth inning. He is in the midst of a six-game hitting streak, though he has only one multi-hit game to go along with one RBI and one run scored in that span. Tovar has shown promise sporadically during his first full season in the majors, though he has only a 55 wRC+ and .275 wOBA through the first two months.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Takes seat Wednesday
Tovar is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. The slick-fielding shortstop will take a seat for the first time since April 21, ending a stretch of 22 straight starts during which he produced a .720 OPS. Alan Trejo will check in at shortstop for the rookie.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Smacks third homer
Tovar went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Tuesday against the Reds. Tovar tallied the Rockies' lone run of the game with a solo home run off Brandon Williamson in the sixth inning. After showing signs of life at the plate, Tovar has gone only 3-for-28 with four RBI and three runs scored while striking out at a 41.4 percent clip across his last eight games. He's had an inconsistent start to his first full season in the majors, hitting only .216/.259/.360 across 147 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Swipes first bag
Tovar went 0-for-4 with a walk, a run and a stolen base Wednesday against the Pirates. Tovar finished Colorado's series at Pittsburgh 0-for-11, but he still found ways to be productive. On Wednesday, he drew a walk to start the fourth inning before stealing second base and coming around to score. Tovar's overall numbers are still poor, but he's gone 14-for-54 with two home runs, 11 RBI, and 12 runs scored across his last 15 games.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Launches second homer
Tovar went 3-for-4 with a double, a two-run home run and a second run scored in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Mets. His sixth-inning shot off Stephen Nogosek capped the scoring for the Rockies on the day. Tovar has found a groove at the plate after a tough first few weeks of 2023, and over his last 12 games the 21-year-old shortstop is batting .333 (14-for-42) with four doubles, a triple and both his homers on the year, along with nine runs and nine RBI.... Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Seven-game hitting streak
Tovar went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored Thursday against the Brewers. Tovar delivered a two-RBI double in the seventh inning to start a late rally for the Rockies. The performance extended his hitting streak to seven games, during which he has gone 8-for-24 with a home run, four RBI and five runs scored in that span. He has benefitted from a lengthy homestand -- only one of those seven games has been on the road -- but he has still quietly improved his season-long line in recent weeks.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Slugs first homer
Tovar went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Brewers. Tovar cranked a Freddy Peralta fastball 460 feet in the third inning to start the scoring. It was the shortstop's first home run of the season and second of his career. The 21-year-old is off to a slow start, slashing .217/.265/.337. Adding to the disappointment, Tovar has yet to pick up his first career big-league steal after swiping 74 bags across four seasons in the minors.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Glimpses of improvement
Tovar went 1-for-4 with two RBI on Monday against the Guardians. Tovar delivered a two-RBI single in the fourth inning to put the Rockies up 3-0. That was his lone hit of the game, but he did not strike out for the first time in his last five starts. Tovar is riding a very modest two-game hitting streak, but that's a positive sign after he went just 2-for-24 with a 34.5 percent strikeout rate across his prior eight games. Overall, he's hitting .194 with seven RBI and four extra-base hits across 77 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Spot not at risk despite slump
Tovar is not at risk of being demoted despite his poor start to the season, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. An 0-for-3 day Saturday against the Phillies dropped Tovar's slash line to .172/.232/.234 through 19 games. The 21-year-old looks overmatched, and with just five career Triple-A games under his belt, there's certainly a case to be made that he needs more time in the minors. The Rockies seemingly don't intend to make a move any time soon, however, instead letting him work through his slump at the big-league level.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Not starting Friday
Tovar isn't in the Rockies' lineup Friday against the Phillies. Tovar holds just a .488 OPS on the year, putting him at risk of losing his everyday role at shortstop. Alan Trejo will start in Tovar's place Friday and bat ninth.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Another hitless performance
Tovar went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Thursday against the Phillies. Tovar turned in his fifth hitless performance in his last seven games, and he's also struck out multiple times in three of those contests. He's only been out of the lineup twice in 20 matchups this season, so the Rockies are giving him time to work through his struggles at the plate. Particularly given Tovar's lack of experience in the upper minors, it's not overly surprising that he's had to make a significant adjustment to major-league pitching. Even so, he'll have to improve on his .180/.242/.246 line to maintain an everyday role for the rest of the campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Gets Monday off
Tovar is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Dodgers, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Tovar secured the Rockies' everyday shortstop job coming out of spring training and started in all four games of the team's season-opening series in San Diego, going 2-for-15 with no walks and six strikeouts in those contests. Despite Tovar's underwhelming series against the Padres, he should still have a decent amount of leash in a regular role. Alan Trejo will spell Tovar in Monday's contest, however.... See More ... Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Swats first big-league homer
Tovar went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday. Tovar's first major-league long ball was a memorable one, as it came off future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw. The 405-foot solo shot accounted for Colorado's only run of the game and was one of the team's two hits. Tovar slashed just .212/.257/.333 over nine contests in his first major-league cup of tea, but he batted .319 with 14 homers and 17 stolen bases in the minors this season and figures to be a big part of the Rockies' future plans.... Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: First career extra-base hit
Tovar went 1-for-4 with a double Thursday against the Giants. Tovar doubled deep to left field to lead off the sixth inning, though he was ultimately stranded there. It was the first extra-base hit of his career, but he does have five knocks across his first 18 at-bats.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Steps out of lineup
Tovar is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. The 21-year-old started the past four games after he was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque last week, and he'll take a seat with Jose Iglesias (thumb) back from the injured list. Tovar should still see plenty of playing time over the final week of the season, and he's 4-for-14 with two walks and a run scored through his first four big-league contests.... See More ... Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Two hits in debut
Tovar went 2-for-4 with a run scored Friday against the Padres. Tovar made his big-league debut Friday and hit eighth while playing shortstop. He collected singles in each of his first two plate appearances and also came around to score in the fourth inning. Tovar should continue to have a clear path to playing time with Jose Iglesias (thumb) and Brendan Rodgers (hamstring) both sidelined.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Active, not in Thursday's lineup
Tovar was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday. He is not in Thursday's lineup but could be available off the bench. Tovar should play pretty regularly down the stretch given the Rockies view him as the shortstop of the future. He hit .316/.384/.537 with 14 home runs and 17 steals in 71 games between Double-A and Triple-A.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Not yet active
Tovar, who is expected to join the Rockies on Thursday, is not in the lineup against the Giants, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. It's not unusual for a prospect to watch his first big-league game from the bench, and in this case, Tovar isn't even on the lineup card yet. His official activation may come Friday. Once active, Tovar should play pretty regularly, as the Rockies view him as the shortstop of the future. He hit .316/.384/.537 with 14 home runs and 17 steals in 71 games between Double-A and Triple-A.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Promotion coming Thursday
Tovar is expected to be called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to play in Thursday's series finale against the Giants, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. The 21-year-old spent the first half of the season with Double-A Hartford before he landed on the injured list with a groin injury in late June, and he was promoted to Albuquerque last week after he completed a rehab assignment. Tovar went 5-for-17 with a home run and two RBI in his first four games at Triple-A, and he posted a .314/.383/.542 slash line with 13 long balls, 47 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 66 contests at Double-A. He is Colorado's top prospect and should receive regular opportunities down the stretch in his first taste of the majors.... See More ... See Less
