The 28-year-old righty will likely report to Triple-A, where he held a 3.27 ERA and 1.32 WHIP through 44 innings last season as part of the Tigers' farm system. Spitzbarth has major-league experience with Pittsburgh in 2021, but he will have some work to do in the minors before the Reds think about giving him another shot in the bigs.

Spitzbarth let go by the Pirates in early November, but he'll have a chance to carve out a role in the Tigers' minor-league system to begin the 2022 season. The 27-year-old made 42 appearances at the Triple-A level last year and posted a 2.12 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 46.2 innings.

The righty pitched 1.1 scoreless innings Tuesday in his major-league debut. It remains to be seen whether Spitzbarth will get further opportunities with the Pirates. Anthony Banda was added to the active roster in a corresponding move.
