Spitzbarth signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Thursday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.
Spitzbarth let go by the Pirates in early November, but he'll have a chance to carve out a role in the Tigers' minor-league system to begin the 2022 season. The 27-year-old made 42 appearances at the Triple-A level last year and posted a 2.12 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 46.2 innings.

He's recorded a 4.50 ERA across four major-league appearances this year, and he'll rejoin the Pirates' bullpen ahead of the final series of the 2021 campaign.

The Pirates optioned Spitzbarth to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
The righty pitched 1.1 scoreless innings Tuesday in his major-league debut. It remains to be seen whether Spitzbarth will get further opportunities with the Pirates. Anthony Banda was added to the active roster in a corresponding move.
