All the projection systems absolutely nailed Chandler Simpson's 2025 home run total, so kudos on that! Simpson was twice promoted to the big league club and was as fast as advertised, successfully stealing 44 bases in 56 attempts when he managed to get on base. Pitchers had absolutely no fear of challenging him with fastballs, because they knew he could not hit home runs, so pitchers did not care Simpson hit .310 off fastballs or even .326 off breaking pitches. Since he saw so many strikes, he rarely walked, so he had to earn his way on base with either very soft contact to holes in the defense or solid line drives. Simpson's limitations leave him in the nine-hole of the lineup, and his defensive struggles put his playing time at risk. As it were, the Rays just had one of the worst single-season home run totals for outfielders in recent memory, so it is unclear how the likes of Simpson, Jonny Deluca, Jake Mangum, and Kameron Misner all co-exist moving forward. This could be another version of Esteury Ruiz if the defense does not improve.

    Simpson is out of the lineup for Thursday's season opener versus the Cardinals, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Simpson closed out spring training with a six-game hitting streak and went 3-for-3 on steal attempts during that stretch, quelling most of the concerns about the left hamstring injury that had slowed him earlier in camp. He should be a fixture in the lineup against righties, but the Rays may be more selective in exposing the left-handed-hitting Simpson to same-handed pitching in 2026 after he produced a .299/.330/.299 slash line (79 wRC+) in 113 plate appearances versus lefties as a rookie. Simpson will cede left field to the right-handed-hitting Ryan Vilade while southpaw Matthew Liberatore takes the bump for St. Louis in the opener.

Left hamstring tightness pushed Simpson's spring debut into late February, and it appears he still hasn't fully recovered from the injury.
