Colby Thomas has put up some gaudy minor league statisticas over the past three seasons, but that has not yet translated to much major league success. Thomas hit 31 homers with a .277 average between Double-A and Triple-A in 2024 and hit .291/.366/.529 with 18 homers in Las Vegas around some back-and-forth callups call-ups Sacramento. Thomas hit .225/.267/.417 with the Athletics with far too many strikeouts, as he struck out 49 times in 120 at bats. He has show the ability to make hard contact and has the athleticsm to man all three spots in the outfield, but he is best used at a corner spot where his arm strength is a deterrent to opponents attempting to take the extra base. If Thomas cannot make better contact at the big league level, he is going to be limited to a reserve outfield role and a short-sided one at that. All six of his home runs came against lefties while he had just one walk and 24 strikeouts against righties in 59 at bats.

    Thomas is dealing with inflammation in his right elbow and will start up a throwing program Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Thomas is still expected to see some Cactus League action as a designated hitter, but he'll need to build up his arm strength before being cleared to play the outfield. The 25-year-old is competing for a bench spot on the Opening Day roster after posting a .684 OPS in 49 games as a rookie last year.

Thomas' homer stretched the Athletics' lead to 7-0 in just the second inning. The reserve outfielder has struggled to see steady playing time, though he hasn't helped his cause much by going just 3-for-22 over his previous nine games before Saturday's big performance. Thomas opened the scoring in the second inning with his first major-league homer, a 406-foot shot off Mitchell Parker that put the A's ahead 2-0. The 24-year-old Thomas had been struggling early in his big-league career, going just 4-for-31 (.129) in 15 games prior to Thursday. Thomas played 73 games at Triple-A last year, and he has cut his strikeout rate from 30.3 percent in 2024 to 26.3 percent this year while upping his hard-hit rate from 36.4 percent to 40.5 percent. Thomas isn't on the 40-man roster and is best suited to play corner outfield, so he may need an injury or a trade to get a look in the coming weeks, even though it seems like his bat is ready for a new challenge.

    Thomas owns a .306 average and .979 OPS across 165 plate appearances over 37 games with Triple-A Las Vegas since being promoted to the affiliate June 18. One of the organization's top prospects, Thomas is delivering on his potential. He's actually outperforming his Double-A numbers by a comfortable margin and has impressively generated 24 extra-base hits among his 44 knocks with Las Vegas. The one minor quibble with Thomas' production with the Aviators is that his stolen-base numbers are down -- he's just 2-for-5 in that department -- but his prior body of work in the minors suggests that's more of an outlier. Given his mastery over Triple-A arms, there appears to be a strong chance of an initial Thomas big-league sighting at some point before the end of the 2024 regular season.
