Pointing out that Alek Thomas enjoyed a career year is faint praise, considering his personal best 81 wRC+ was well below average. Furthermore, his strikeout rate was a career worst, and he relied on a .324 BABIP, which was not supported by his falling hard hit rate. Not to pile on, but Thomas graded among the weakest defenders in center field. His ground ball rate dropped to a career-low 52.1 percent last season, which continued to cap already modest power. While he owns 75th-percentile sprint speed, it has little effect alongside a .289 OBP. Thomas is slated to open the season in center field, but with the Diamondbacks reshaping their roster, his role is far from secure and his place with the organization is not assured.

    Thomas went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, three RBI and one stolen base in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers. Thomas did some damage from the No. 8 spot in the order in this contest to avenge his 0-for-3 performance to open the season Thursday. The outfielder looks to be the early favorite for time in center field, though he and Jordan Lawlar made swap between left and center at times. Thomas went 10-for-31 (.323) with six extra-base hits in spring training, and if he can keep the bat hot earlier in the year, he should find himself in an everyday role. He slashed .249/.289/.370 with nine home runs, 19 doubles, three triples, 38 RBI, 51 runs scored and seven stolen bases over 469 plate appearances in the 2025 regular season.

The 25-year-old gave the Diamondbacks an early lead with a three-run homer in the third inning. It was the second home run of the Cactus League for Thomas, who has hit safely in all four games since returning from the World Baseball Classic. He started in left field Saturday while Jordan Lawlar patrolled center field. The Diamondbacks haven't determined which player will stay or go, but there are cost savings to be had.
