Player Outlook
Ivan Herrera took a big step forward last season at Triple-A Memphis, sporting a .291/.451/.500 batting line with 10 home runs and 11 stolen bases. He was also very productive during his brief time in the majors, slashing .297/.409/.351 with a 61.5 percent hard-hit rate in 13 contests. Herrera's strike-zone discipline has long been a strength, and he took it to another level in 2023 at Memphis with a 20 percent walk rate and 20.5 percent strikeout rate. His power hasn't fully unlocked to this point, due in large part to a bloated groundball rate, but given that he's still just 23 that part of his game might still grow. With Andrew Knizner non-tendered, Herrera is in line to serve as Willson Contreras' understudy in 2024. It's a role which garnered 63 starts and 241 plate appearances for Knizner last season, and a similar workload for Herrera seems likely. That's not enough playing time for Herrera to be very fantasy relevant, but he would have some upside if pushed into more responsibilities.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Will continue to get regular reps

The Cardinals will look to continue giving Herrera consistent playing time even after Willson Contreras (hand) is available to catch, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Contreras hopes to be able to catch this weekend in Arizona after missing four games and then being limited to designated hitter duty in the last two contests. With Lars Nootbaar (ribs) also due back Friday, it creates a bit of a playing time logjam for the Cards. Herrera, though, has earned regular reps, putting up an .875 OPS with three homers and seven RBI in nine games. The 23-year-old should continue to be worth using as a second fantasy catcher as long as he's getting at-bats.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Homers again Wednesday

Herrera went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies. Herrera got the Cardinals on the board with his second-inning homer. He's gone deep twice over the last three games and now has three homers, seven RBI and six runs scored across 34 plate appearances. As long as Willson Contreras (hand) continues to be unable to catch, Herrera is in line for a larger role behind the dish.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Swats second homer

Herrera went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two total runs scored in Monday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Phillies. Herrera has gotten an extended run of playing time while Willson Contreras (hand) remains out of the lineup. Over his last five contests, Herrera has gone 7-for-20 with two homers and four RBI. The 23-year-old gives the Cardinals another option for the designated hitter spot when the team is at full health, and he may force his way into the lineup even Contreras is healthy if he continues to hit well.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Homers in comeback win

Herrera went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, an RBI single and additional run scored in Thursday's 8-5 win over the Marlins. Herrera opened the scoring in the second inning with his homer, and his other hit sparked the Cardinals' five-run rally in the seventh inning. The catcher is filling in while Willson Contreras (hand) is unavailable. This was Herrera's second multi-hit effort in a row, and he's now 4-for-12 with four RBI and two runs scored over four contests this season. He's also yet to draw a walk while striking out five times, so there's still room for improvement with plate discipline.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Steps in for injured Contreras

Herrera will start at catcher and bat cleanup in Thursday's game against the Marlins. Herrera will pick up his second straight start behind the plate in Thursday's home opener. Both Herrera and top backstop Willson Contreras -- who served as the Cardinals' designated hitter -- were included in the lineup in Wednesday's loss to the Padres, but Contreras was hit by a pitch in left hand during the contest and is dealing with swelling a day later. Contreras is scheduled to undergo X-rays later Thursday as the Cardinals look to assess whether he's dealing with anything more than inflammation and soreness. For now, Contreras is being viewed as day-to-day, but Herrera could be in line for an extended run as the Cardinals' primary catcher if Contreras' injury is significant enough to force him to the injured list.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Managing shoulder issue

Herrera isn't starting Sunday's spring game against the Marlins as scheduled due to shoulder pain, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The 23-year-old has just 24 big-league games under his belt but is poised to share catching duties with Willson Contreras in 2024. It's unclear at this point if the injury is expected to affect Herrera's availability for Opening Day.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Three hits in win

Herrera went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a hit-by-pitch in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Nationals. • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Withdraws from WBC

Herrera will remain in camp with the Cardinals instead of playing for Panama at the World Baseball Classic, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Herrera withdrew from the WBC on Saturday, and he'll now turn his focus on competing for the backup catcher spot behind Willson Contreras. Herrera went 2-for-18 with one RBI, two walks and eight strikeouts across 22 plate appearances in the majors last season. He also hit .274/.381/.402 with six home runs, six stolen bases and 34 RBI in 65 games with Triple-A Memphis. Andrew Knizner is more likely to open the season as the Cardinals' backup catcher, but Herrera will try to force the issue with a strong spring.

Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Friday. The 22-year-old joined the Cardinals for the two-game series against the Blue Jays this week and will now return to Triple-A. He has a .295/.385/.432 slash line with three home runs and 21 RBI in 37 games for Memphis this season.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Returns to big leagues

Herrera owns a .295 average with three homers, 21 RBI, 22 runs and two stolen bases over 139 at-bats over 37 games with Memphis this season. He'll look to improve upon the .111 average he produced over his first 11 career major-league contests.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Heads back to Triple-A

Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Herrera joined the big club for a second time in mid-June, but he picked up just two hits over 18 at-bats, so he will head back to the minors for the time being. Herrera is one of the Cardinals' better prospects, so he could get another shot with the big club before the campaign comes to a close, particularly if Yadier Molina (knee) continues to miss time.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Receives second straight start

Herrera will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Marlins, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Since Yadier Molina (knee) remains without a clear timeline to return from the injured list and with Andrew Knizner sitting on a lowly .525 OPS through 136 plate appearances on the season, the Cardinals may be ready to give Herrera glimpse as their primary catcher. The 22-year-old rookie will pick up his second straight start after going 2-for-3 with a walk in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Cubs. Prior to being called up from the minors following Molina's placement on the IL, Herrera showcased a dash of pop (.145 ISO) and strong plate discipline (12.7 percent walk rate, 14.7 percent strikeout rate) over his 129 plate appearances with Triple-A Memphis.
