Melvin has opted out of the 2020 NFL season, Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com reports.
Melvin, who is coming off a 2019 campaign in which he recorded a career-high 68 tackles in 13 games with the Lions, was expected to add depth and experience to the Jaguars' cornerback corps this coming season. He becomes the team's third player to opt out, joining fellow defenders Al Woods and Lerentee McCray.
Melvin has agreed to one-year, $2.25 million contract with the Jaguars, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The 30-year-old is coming off a 2019 campaign in which he recorded a career-high 68 tackles in 13 games with the Lions. The 6-foot-2, 194-pounder -- who is now slated to play for his seventh NFL team -- will add depth and experience to the Jaguars' cornerback corps this coming season.
Melvin racked up 68 tackles and 11 pass breakups over 13 games in 2019.
Playing opposite stud cornerback Darius Slay, Melvin was picked on frequently this season. This was great news from a fantasy perspective, considering it helped the 30-year-old finished the year ranked in the top five in tackles among all cornerbacks. From a real-life perspective, the Lions were probably hoping fifth-round rookie Amani Oruwariye would have taken the starting job away from the aging veteran at some point. Even though that never happened, it seems very likely that Detroit will let Melvin walk in unrestricted free agency this offseason.
Melvin (ribs) will play in Sunday's divisional matchup against Minnesota.
Melvin had missed the last two games with the rib issue but, as evidenced by this news, finally will return to the field. With the 30-year-old healthy, he's expected to operate as the team's No. 3 cornerback for Week 14.
Melvin (ribs) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Vikings, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Th 30-year-old sat out the last two games due to the rib issue but may be able to return Sunday after working as a limited practice participant all week. Amani Oruwariye is in line to receive another start should Melvin be unable to suit up.
Melvin (ribs) was a limited participant at Wednesday's practice, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Melvin is hoping to avoid missing a third straight contest but being limited at Wednesday's practice indicates he could be forced to sit yet again. He'll be hoping to increase his practice reps over the next couple of days. If Melvin is unable to face the Vikings on Sunday, Amani Oruwariye will continue seeing an increased workload.
Melvin (ribs) is ruled out for Thursday's matchup against the Bears.
Melvin popped up on the injury report last Friday, and he'll miss a second straight game due to the injury. Amani Oruwariye logged a 76-percent snap share in Melvin's stead Week 12, and the Lions will likely roll with a similar game plan in this contest.
Melvin (ribs) didn't participate in Tuesday's practice, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Melvin was inactive for this past Sunday's loss to the Redskins, and he hasn't practiced yet this week. The 30-year-old cornerback is in danger of missing his second straight contest, and Jamal Agnew (ankle) is trending in a similar direction. Dee Virgin and Mike Ford could see an increase in duties if that's the case.
Melvin (ribs) is inactive for the Detroit's Week 12 matchup against the Redskins.
Melvin was added to the injury report Friday, so it appears he picked up the injury during the week of practice. His absence will leave the Lions shorthanded in the secondary, as Jamal Agnew (ankle) has also been ruled out. As a result, Dee Virgin and Mike Ford will see more playing time than usual.
Melvin recorded one tackle over 16 snaps during Friday's preseason game against Buffalo.
Melvin started the game opposite Darius Slay and seems poised for a significant role with Detroit during a contract year. He'll undoubtedly benefit from the Lions' now stacked defensive front that could spell trouble for opposing quarterbacks.
Melvin agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Lions on Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Melvin spent last season with the Raiders, appearing in 14 games (seven starts) and accumulating 56 tackles and one interception. The 29-year-old cornerback will look to carve out a role for himself in Detroit's secondary for 2019.
Melvin is set to visit with the Lions on Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Melvin appeared in 14 games with the Raiders last season, including seven starts while notching 56 tackles and one interception. The 29-year-old veteran could earn a depth role in Detroit's secondary for 2019.
Melvin registered a team-high 12 tackles (11 solo) Monday in the Raiders' 27-13 win over the Broncos.
It was a rather anomalous tackle output for the cornerback, who had recorded more than four stops on only two other occasions this season. As a result, he's probably not worth considering as an IDP option in Week 17 in Kansas City, with safeties Karl Joseph, Marcus Gilchrist and Erik Harris looking like more appealing options among the Oakland secondary players.
Melvin (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the 49ers, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.
Melvin remains inactive even in the wake of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie's retirement, and he'll miss his second consecutive game of the season as result. Daryl Worley will draw the start at left cornerback against San Francisco during Thursday Night Football.
Melvin (coach's decision) has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Colts, Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Veteran defensive backs Rashaan Melvin and Reggie Nelson have been benched for Week 8 by coach Jon Gruden. Melvin was on the field for just seven defensive snaps during the Raiders' Week 6 loss to the Seahawks, so Gareon Conley could be in line for additional work behind Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Daryl Worley at cornerback.
Melvin accounted for nine solo tackles and two passes defensed in Sunday's 45-42 overtime win over the Browns.
Melvin has totaled seven passes defensed through the first four games of the season, but he also posted a season high in tackles Sunday. He'll face a high-scoring Chargers offense led by quarterback Philip Rivers in Week 5.
Melvin recorded three tackles (two solo), three passes defensed and an interception in Sunday's 20-19 loss to the Broncos.
Melvin snagged his first interception as a Raider during Sunday's tilt, but Oakland's defense gave up 13 unanswered points in the second half to ultimately lose by one. The 28-year-old will continue to start at cornerback across from Gareon Conley, as the duo played 64 of a possible 66 defensive snaps in Week 2.
The Raiders and Melvin came to agreement on a one-year, $6.5 million contract Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Oft-injured during his five pro seasons, Melvin is coming off the healthiest stretch of his career, playing 25 games the past two years with the Colts after logging time in just 12 prior to that. He produced modest results on the field -- 96 tackles and three interceptions -- and should slot in as a starting cornerback in the Raiders defense. Expect Melvin to line up opposite 2017 first-round pick Gareon Conley.
The Colts placed Melvin (hand) on injured reserve Wednesday.
Melvin has acted as the No. 1 cornerback for an injury-ravaged Colts secondary for much of the season, but he's been sidelined the past four weeks with a dislocated metatarsal on his left hand and didn't make enough progress in his recovery to gain clearance for the Week 17 matchup with the Texans. With Melvin unavailable for the season finale, Kenny Moore, Quincy Wilson and Nate Hairston should serve as the team's primary corners.
Melvin (hand) is out for Saturday's game against the Ravens, Zak Keefer of The Indianapolis Star reports.
As a result, Melvin will miss his fourth straight game. At this point, it would not be surprising to see the cornerback held out for the rest of the season. With Melvin out, expect Kenny Moore to see increased snaps in the Colts' defensive backfield.
