McGuire rushed six times for 30 yards and added three catches for 27 yards on six targets in Sunday's 41-10 loss to Buffalo.
McGuire led the ineffective Jets offense in scrimmage yards, but Isaiah Crowell had the better fantasy day thanks to a five-yard rushing touchdown. Heading into the Week 11 bye, the pair are operating in a near even backfield timeshare, with Trenton Cannon also involved in a change-of-pace role.
McGuire carried six times for 23 yards and caught three of five targets for 37 yards during Sunday's 13-6 loss to the Dolphins.
McGuire received his first offensive touches of the season, finishing tied for second on the team in receiving yards. He received less than half the carries allotted to Isaiah Crowell, managing a similar 3.8 yards per carry, but he was much more involved as a receiver out of the backfield. McGuire could play a role in next week's contest against the Bills, when he will look to build off this promising outing.
New York waived fellow running back De'Angelo Henderson in a corresponding move, thus clearing the way for McGuire to make his season debut Sunday against the Dolphins. Considering McGuire has been practicing the past two weeks after July surgery to repair a fractured foot resulted in him opening the season on IR, it's not expected that he'll face significant limitations as he joins the active roster. With Bilal Powell (neck) out for the season and rookie Trenton Cannon having yet to establish himself as a formidable change-of-pace option, it's conceivable that McGuire might immediately emerge as the top complement to Isaiah Crowell in Week 9.
Coach Todd Bowles said Friday that McGuire (foot) is "trending toward" returning from injured reserve and playing Sunday against the Dolphins, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
Mehta relays that the Jets are planning to release fellow running back De'Angelo Henderson, thereby opening up a spot on the 53-man roster for McGuire. It's unclear how extensively McGuire has been practicing since the Jets designated him to return from IR on Oct. 17, but the team's plan to bring him back well before the three-week evaluation window closes suggests his health isn't much of a concern. If that's the case, McGuire could immediately step in as the Jets' primary change-of-pace option to complement lead ballcarrier Isaiah Crowell. After Bilal Powell (neck) suffered a season-ending injury in Week 7, rookie Trenton Cannon acted as the No. 2 back in the Week 8 loss to Chicago, but didn't make much of an impact with six carries for 10 yards and three receptions for 12 yards.
As Costello notes, McGuire has been moving well since returning to practice Oct. 17 and appears to have quelled any doubts the Jets may have had about his health coming off July 30 surgery to repair a fractured foot. The Jets will have until Nov. 7 to activate McGuire or keep him on IR for the rest of the season, but it's unlikely the team waits out the full 21-day window with backfield depth now an issue following Bilal Powell's (neck) recent season-ending injury. If McGuire is added to the roster before the Week 9 contest, he could immediately challenge rookie Trenton Cannon for change-of-pace duties behind lead runner Isaiah Crowell.
