Vasquez notes that coach Adam Gase has made it clear that he will try not to overwork Bell, so there should be some touches available for Montgomery and McGuire. Montgomery, who's an accomplished pass catcher, is expected to bump McGuire down to third on the depth chart, so New York's 2017 sixth-rounder will need to show serious improvement to earn a meaningful role, barring an injury to one of the veterans ahead of him.
McGuire will compete with Trenton Cannon and De'Angelo Henderson for backfield slotting behind prized offseason acquisition Le'Veon Bell, WFAN.com reports.
Even with Isaiah Crowell released on Thursday, the battle for the No. 2 running back job becomes far less interesting when the starter is well established as a three-down workhorse. The Jets won't necessarily use Bell the same way the Steelers did, but it's a safe bet they didn't give him $25 million guaranteed to share carries with the likes of McGuire, Cannon and Henderson. While he currently lines up as the favorite for that No. 2 spot, McGuire likely will be resigned to handcuff status if Bell remains healthy this summer.
McGuire rushed 18 times for 41 yards and added 24 yards on two catches in Sunday's 38-3 loss to the Patriots. He finishes the season with 276 yards and three touchdowns on 92 carries, along with 19 catches for 193 yards and a touchdown,
McGuire couldn't find much running room in this season finale, putting an end to the momentum he had built up after inheriting the starting role down the stretch. Isaiah Crowell should be back from his toe injury next season and the Jets could opt for a flashy running back signing using their plentiful cap space, so McGuire should have no shortage of competition for touches in his third campaign.
McGuire rushed 14 times for 35 yards and a touchdown while adding three catches for 50 yards and another score on five targets in Sunday's 44-38 overtime loss to the Packers.
McGuire extended his rushing touchdown streak to three games with a four-yard score in the first quarter and flashed his receiving chops with a 20-yard touchdown late in the third. While his 2.8 yards-per-carry average on 49 attempts over the past three weeks has left a lot to be desired, McGuire's combination of robust volume and goal-line usage since Isaiah Crowell went on injured reserve with a toe injury has made the second-year running back a worthy late-season addition. Expect him to shoulder the majority of the rushing workload against the Patriots in Week 17.
McGuire had 18 carried for 42 yards and a touchdown while catching three of four targets for 29 yards in Saturday's loss to the Texans.
McGuire took over as the top backfield option for the Jets with Isaiah Crowell (toe) on injured reserve, and was unable to find much space to maneuver. The 24-year-old saved fantasy owners with the two-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, but the Texans' dominant run defense otherwise prevailed. The good news for McGuire is No. 2 running back Trenton Cannon didn't fare any better with seven carries for 13 yards. The Packers allow 4.6 yards per carry and represent a more favorable matchup next week.
