Elijah McGuire: Heads to Cowboys' practice squad
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Cowboys signed McGuire to the practice squad Sunday, Todd Archer of reports.

The Chiefs released McGuire on Saturday, and the 26-year-old running back will look to add depth in Dallas. The Cowboys are carrying just three running backs - Ezekiel Elliott, Tony Pollard and Rico Dowdle -- to begin the year, and if any of them are injured, McGuire will likely be promoted to the active roster since he has versatility as a pass-catcher.

Chiefs' Elijah McGuire: Signs reserve/future contract
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire signed a reserve/future contract with the Chiefs on Tuesday, according to the NFL's official transaction report.

The running back initially signed to the Chiefs' practice squad back in November and he'll now get a chance to develop in the Chiefs system this offseason. Both LeSean McCoy and Spencer Ware are slated to become free agents this offseason which could give McGuire added reps this spring.

Elijah McGuire: Inks practice-squad deal
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire signed with the Chiefs' practice squad Tuesday, freelance NFL writer Howard Balzer reports.

Damien Williams (ribs) and LeSean McCoy (undisclosed) were injured during Week 11's win over the Chargers, so the Chiefs are bringing in additional depth in case one or both are unable to play Sunday against the Raiders. McGuire last played in 2018 for the Jets, and he struggled on the ground with 2.7 YPC over the last four weeks but punched in three touchdowns. The 25-year-old has pass-catching upside, though, as he recorded 11 receptions for 126 yards and a score over that stretch.

Elijah McGuire: Receives interest from Houston
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire worked out for the Texans recently, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.

McGuire would only project as depth on this squad, barring an injury. Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson are coming off one of their best rushing games of the season, whereas the 25-year-old hasn't played an NFL snap since last year.

Elijah McGuire: Bumped off practice squad
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire was released off the Browns' practice squad Tuesday.

McGuire joined Cleveland's practice squad after being waived by the team Sept. 19 but will now search for a new team. The 25-year-old spent his first two seasons with the Jets and rushed 180 times for 591 yards before being waived ahead of September's roster deadline.

Elijah McGuire: Joins Browns' practice squad
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire has been added to the Browns' practice squad.

McGuire, a 2017 sixth-rounder, racked up 180 carries for 591 yards and four TDs, to go along with 36 catches for 370 yards and two receiving scores for the Jets in 24 games over the course of the 2017 and 2018 campaigns. He therefore gives the Browns a depth option at running back with some recent NFL experience under his belt.

Elijah McGuire: Waived by Cleveland
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Browns waived McGuire on Thursday, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

McGuire signed with the Browns on Monday, but he ultimately failed to secure tenure with the team. The 2017 sixth-round pick will look to carve out a depth role elsewhere in the league.

Browns' Elijah McGuire: Signs with Browns
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire signed with the Browns on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

With Dontrell Hilliard (concussion) unavailable, the Browns are adding a third running back behind Nick Chubb and D'Ernest Johnson. It's an interesting opportunity for McGuire, with Cleveland scheduled to face his former team, the Jets, on Monday Night Football. It isn't clear whether or not McGuire will be active for the contest, but he probably won't have much of a role even if he is.

Elijah McGuire: Heads to Cleveland's practice squad
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire signed with the Browns' practice squad on Monday, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

McGuire ended up as the odd man out in the backfield for the Jets and was let go Friday. The 25-year-old played in 24 games with the Jets over his first two seasons, rushing for 591 yards and three touchdowns with an unimpressive 3.3 YPC. He also added 36 catches for 370 yards and two touchdowns.

Elijah McGuire: Cut loose by Jets
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Jets cut McGuire on Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

The Jets only have one or two spots for running backs behind roster locks Le'Veon Bell and Ty Montgomery. Given his preseason averages of 2.6 yards per carry and 6.8 per reception, McGuire became a longshot to beat out Bilal Powell or Trenton Cannon. The 2017 sixth-round pick has shown decent ability as a pass catcher out of the backfield, but a career mark of 3.3 YPC could scare other teams away.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: No running room in preseason finale
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire rushed 14 times for 29 yards and caught all five of his targets for 35 yards in Thursday's 6-0 preseason win over the Eagles.

While McGuire showcased decent receiving ability out of the backfield this preseason, his inability to get going on the ground could keep him off the roster considering the Jets' other running backs don't lack pass-catching skills. The 25-year-old Louisiana Lafayette product is in serious danger of getting cut before Week 1.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Doesn't strengthen roster case
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire rushed five times for 21 yards and caught his lone target for five yards in Saturday's 28-13 preseason loss to the Saints.

McGuire remains on the roster bubble, and New York's preseason usage of its running backs has made it clear that Ty Montgomery is the top backup to Le'Veon Bell. While most impact players will sit out the preseason finale, it wouldn't be surprising to see McGuire out there making his case for a roster spot.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Still buried on depth chart
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire rushed five times for 14 yards and caught one of two targets for 10 yards in Thursday's 22-10 win over Atlanta in Week 2 of preseason.

McGuire failed to repeat his strong pass-catching performance from the previous week while once again struggling on the ground. Ty Montgomery and Bilal Powell both mixed in before McGuire while Le'Veon Bell sat out. The trio of veterans ahead of McGuire on the depth chart are all well-rounded running backs who won't cede their roles without a major push from the Louisiana Lafayette product over the two remaining preseason contests.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Catches TD in preseason opener
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire rushed six times for 13 yards and caught six of seven targets for 38 yards in Thursday's preseason opener against the Giants.

McGuire couldn't get much going on the ground but salvaged his day with a nice pass-catching performance, which included a seven-yard receiving score in the second quarter. Top dog Le'Veon Bell sat this one out, as did veteran Bilal Powell, while Ty Montgomery got the start over McGuire. There's a good chance McGuire is competing for a roster spot with Trenton Cannon, who can also contribute as a gunner and kick returner on special teams, so the 25-year-old running back will need to turn things up moving forward if he wants to avoid the chopping block.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Could be caught in roster crunch
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire will have to earn a roster spot in camp, Matt Stypulkoski of reports.

Stypulkoski's prediction for the roster has McGuire on the outside looking in, but the 25-year-old running back still has plenty of time to change that outlook during training camp and the preseason. The Jets are unlikely to carry five running backs when the season starts, meaning one of Bilal Powell, Ty Montgomery, Trenton Cannon or McGuire will likely be on the chopping block with new starter Le'Veon Bell assured the top spot on the depth chart. Montgomery can also play wide receiver while Cannon could morph into an ace on special teams, while McGuire doesn't bring the versatility often required of players on the roster bubble.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Bumped down to third string
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire will likely work as the Jets' No. 3 running back next season in the wake of the team signing Ty Montgomery to back up Le'Veon Bell, Andy Vasquez of USA Today reports.

Vasquez notes that coach Adam Gase has made it clear he will not overwork Bell, so there should be some touches available for Montgomery and McGuire. Montgomery, who's an accomplished pass catcher, is expected to bump McGuire down to third on the depth chart, so New York's 2017 sixth-rounder will need to show serious improvement to earn a meaningful role, barring an injury to one of the veterans ahead of him.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Now behind Bell instead of Crowell
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire will compete with Trenton Cannon and De'Angelo Henderson for backfield slotting behind prized offseason acquisition Le'Veon Bell, reports.

Even with Isaiah Crowell released on Thursday, the battle for the No. 2 running back job becomes far less interesting when the starter is well established as a three-down workhorse. The Jets won't necessarily use Bell the same way the Steelers did, but it's a safe bet they didn't give him $25 million guaranteed to share carries with the likes of McGuire, Cannon and Henderson. While he currently lines up as the favorite for that No. 2 spot, McGuire likely will be resigned to handcuff status if Bell remains healthy this summer.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Struggles in finale
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire rushed 18 times for 41 yards and added 24 yards on two catches while also losing a fumble in Sunday's 38-3 loss to the Patriots. He finishes the season with 276 yards and three touchdowns on 92 carries, along with 19 catches for 193 yards and a touchdown,

McGuire couldn't find much running room in this season finale, putting an end to the momentum he had built up after inheriting the starting role down the stretch. Isaiah Crowell should be back from his toe injury next season and the Jets could opt for a flashy running back signing using their plentiful cap space, so McGuire should have no shortage of competition for touches in his third campaign.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Continuing to find end zone
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire rushed 14 times for 35 yards and a touchdown while adding three catches for 50 yards and another score on five targets in Sunday's 44-38 overtime loss to the Packers.

McGuire extended his rushing touchdown streak to three games with a four-yard score in the first quarter and flashed his receiving chops with a 20-yard touchdown late in the third. While his 2.8 yards-per-carry average on 49 attempts over the past three weeks has left a lot to be desired, McGuire's combination of robust volume and goal-line usage since Isaiah Crowell went on injured reserve with a toe injury has made the second-year running back a worthy late-season addition. Expect him to shoulder the majority of the rushing workload against the Patriots in Week 17.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Produces little as lead back
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire had 18 carries for 42 yards and a touchdown while catching three of four targets for 29 yards in Saturday's loss to the Texans.

McGuire took over as the top backfield option for the Jets with Isaiah Crowell (toe) on injured reserve, and was unable to find much space to maneuver. The 24-year-old saved fantasy owners with the two-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, but the Texans' dominant run defense otherwise prevailed. The good news for McGuire is No. 2 running back Trenton Cannon didn't fare any better with seven carries for 13 yards. The Packers allow 4.6 yards per carry and represent a more favorable matchup next week.
