49ers' Richie James: Injures ankle in blowout win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Kyle Shanahan said in the postgame press conference that James suffered an ankle injury in Sunday's 33-6 win over New England, Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee reports.

It's not clear exactly when James suffered the injury, but his only contributions on the stat sheet were two kick returns for 39 yards. The depth receiver and return man will hope to heal up in time for his team's Week 8 trip to Seattle.

49ers' Richie James: Returns from injured reserve
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James (hamstring) was activated from injured reserve Saturday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The 25-year-old returned to practice during the first week of October and will be available for Sunday's matchup with the Rams. James should provide depth with San Francisco's group of wide receivers in good health.

49ers' Richie James: Returns to practice
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

San Francisco opened the three-week practice window for James (hamstring) on Wednesday.

James can rejoin his teammates in practice again, and the 49ers will now have three weeks to activate him off IR if they like what they see. The wide receiver will have to spend the rest of the season on IR if he's not activated in the three-week window, but San Francisco's dearth of weapons at his position suggests that outcome is unlikely for James.

49ers' Richie James: Could be ready for activation
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James (hamstring) could be activated off injured reserve this week, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

James has yet to hit the field this season after suffering the injury prior to the team's Week 1 matchup against the Cardinals. He also had an injury-plagued offseason, as he missed all of training camp with a wrist injury. That said, even if he's activated, James is likely to be buried on the receiver depth chart.

49ers' Richie James: Placed on IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James (hamstring) was placed on IR on Thursday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

This move cleared a roster spot for San Francisco to officially sign Mohamed Sanu in an effort to bolster the team's banged-up receiving corps. James will be eligible to return no earlier than Week 5 against the Dolphins.

49ers' Richie James: DNP again Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James (hamstring) did not practice Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

James hasn't practice in any capacity since suffering a hamstring injury Week 1 against Arizona, so it looks like he's trending in the wrong direction for Sunday's game against the Jets. Jerick McKinnon and Trent Taylor will handle kick return duties if James is forced to miss time.

49ers' Richie James: Still battling hamstring issue
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James (hamstring) isn't practicing Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

James missed San Francisco's season opener due to his hamstring injury, and it's keeping him off the practice field as the team begins to prepare for a Week 2 clash with the Jets. The depth receiver will need to up his practice participation as the week goes along to have any chance of suiting up Sunday.

49ers' Richie James: Picks up hamstring issue
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James has been ruled out of Sunday's contest against the Cardinals due to a hamstring injury, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.

The 49ers have suffered yet another injury to their receiving corps. In Week 1, Brandon Aiyuk was absent with a hamstring issue of his own, while Deebo Samuel (foot), Jalen Hurd (knee), Chris Thompson (undisclosed) and Tavon Austin (knee) occupied spots on injured reserve. With James sidelined, San Francisco is down to just three healthy bodies at wide receiver: Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor and Dante Pettis.

49ers' Richie James: Activated from NFI list
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James (wrist) was activated from the 49ers' non-football injury list Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

James missed all of training camp, but coach Kyle Shanahan expects the 5-foot-9 receiver to be ready for Week 1. The 49ers likely envision James in a depth role on offense, potentially contributing as a return specialist as well. His clean recovery from a broken wrist could hurt the roster odds for guys like Dante Pettis and Kevin White.

49ers' Richie James: Should be ready for Week 1
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that he expects James (wrist) to be cleared ahead of the 49ers' Sept. 13 season opener against the Cardinals, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Shanahan said in late August that he didn't expect James to be ready for Week 1, so this seems like an indication that the second-year pro's recovery is ahead of schedule. If he makes the roster and receives full medical clearance, James stands to contribute as a depth receiver and return man for the 49ers.

49ers' Richie James: Unlikely to suit up Week 1
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't expect James (wrist) to play Week 1 against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

In the next breath, Shanahan said the 49ers "know" James won't be available for the first six weeks of the season, per David Lombardi of The Athletic. Currently on the active/non-football injury list due to a broken wrist sustained in June, James seems poised to move to the reserve/PUP list before the campaign kicks off, if Shanahan is to be believed.

49ers' Richie James: Moves to NFI list
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The 49ers placed James (wrist) on the active/non-football injury list Tuesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

One day removed from coming off the reserve/COVID-19 list, James moves over to the NFI list as he recovers from a broken wrist. He suffered the injury in June, and was expected to be sidelined for at least two months. Thus, James' current standing on the roster is of no surprise.

49ers' Richie James: Gets off COVID list
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James (wrist) was removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

It's been a difficult past two months for James, who broke his wrist in June before either testing positive for COVID or being in contact with someone who did as he reported to the 49ers. With the addition of 2020 first-rounder Brandon Aiyuk and the return to health of Trent Taylor (foot) and Jalen Hurd (back), James may be on the outside looking in at a regular-season roster spot. Working in James' favor, though, is his work as a returner.

49ers' Richie James: Heading to COVID list
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James (illness) was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

James already had a steep climb to make the 49ers' regular-season roster due to a broken bone in his wrist and his standing well down the depth chart. Now with a positive test or exposure to the virus, he'll be away from the team for the time being until he passes the requisite number of tests. At the very least, James provides utility as a returner, averaging 23.4 yards on 43 kick returns and 7.5 yards on 45 punt returns in 29 career games.

49ers' Richie James: Breaks wrist
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James is recovering from a broken bone in his wrist, with the expectation of being sidelined for at least two months, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

With Deebo Samuel recovering from foot surgery and both Trent Taylor (foot) and Travis Benjamin (quad) looking to rebound from season-ending injuries last year, the 49ers suddenly have depth issues at what previously appeared to be a deep position. James played all 16 regular-season games in 2019, returning 33 punts for 264 yards and 20 kickoffs for 428 yards and adding a 9-165-1 receiving line on 204 offensive snaps. Any absence could create an opening for Benjamin, Dante Pettis or D.J. Reed to get more work on returns.

49ers' Richie James: Mainly used on special teams
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James had six receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown in 2019, spending most of his time as a return man for the 49ers.

James totaled 428 kick return yards and 264 punt return yards, giving some value in leagues that account for those statistics. Outside of that, the speedy wideout was mainly used for the occasional deep shot, resulting in minimal fantasy value at best. James is under contract for next season, and he'll likely have to re-earn his spot on the 53-man roster with Trent Taylor (foot) set to return healthy at the start of the 2020 campaign.

49ers' Richie James: Huge kick return Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James ripped off an 81-yard kickoff return but did not receive a target on offense in Saturday's 34-31 win over the Rams.

James made his mark on special teams with a season-high 81-yard kickoff return on the 49ers' first drive of the game. The second-year wideout continues to serve as the team's fourth receiver, averaging 7.4 offensive snaps but receiving no targets over his last five contests. In fact, he has just six catches on the season, but has gained 165 yards (27.5 yards per reception) with those limited touches. James can't be relied upon in his current role heading into the final week of the regular season.

49ers' Richie James: Plays three snaps Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James only played three snaps in Sunday's 29-22 loss to the Falcons.

James sits at the bottom of San Francisco's wide receiver depth chart, and he will likely remain there barring an injury. His contributions should continue to come mostly on special teams.

49ers' Richie James: Starts, but used sparsely
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James technically started Sunday's win over Green Bay, but he did not have a target and finished with just 12 snaps on offense.

James did not have a target, but he did receive a carry for zero yards in addition to his usual duties on special teams. The speedy wideout has been used minimally this season, and that trend figures to continue as Emmanuel Sanders (ribs) and George Kittle (knee/ankle) become healthier down the stretch. James is a non-factor heading into Sunday's tilt against the Ravens.

49ers' Richie James: Not used on offense
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James did not receive a target in Sunday's 51-13 win over Carolina.

James was limited to return duties for the third time over San Francisco's last four contests. The 49ers acquired veteran wideout Emmanuel Sanders via a trade this week, which pushes the 24-year-old even further down the receiver depth chart. James is not a standard fantasy option heading into a Thursday Night Football matchup against Arizona.
