Newell will not be handed a qualifying offer by the Rangers and will hit free agency, Larry Brooks of The New York Post reports.
After three seasons with AHL Hartford, it seems Newell's time with the organization has come to a close. Signed as a free agent coming out of St. Cloud State, the 25-year-old winger managed decent numbers with Hartford this past year (13 points in 24 games).
