Manchester City vs. Arsenal score: Kevin De Bruyne's brace makes Pep Guardiola's side title favorites

With the Premier League title possibly on the line, Manchester City left no doubt, brushing Arsenal aside 4-1 on Wednesday at the Etihad to draw within two points of first place in the league. While it may seem like Arsenal are in control, the title is now in City's hands due to their two games in hand on the Gunners. Win those and it's a four point City lead.

After an excellent feed by Erling Haaland, it was Kevin De Bruyne who would open the scoring in the seventh minute. Thanks to heroics from Aaron Ramsdale early, the match stayed close despite City peppering the Arsenal goal, at least for a while. It wouldn't get out of hand until stoppage time in the first half. John Stones found the back of the net with a goal that was initially judged to be offside ruled on by VAR, giving City a 2-0 lead before the end of the first half. It was a demoralizing way for Mikel Arteta's men to enter the locker room when the only good news following the first half was supposed to be that they were only down a goal and that they could get back into things. But when that goes in what does a manager say at the half?

It wouldn't matter anyway. De Bruyne completed his brace before Arsenal got a consolation goal from a rare party as Rob Holding had a cool finish from Leandro Trossard's layoff. City would restore their three goal advantage in stoppage time in record breaking fashion. Haaland finished a chance created by Phil Foden to score his 33rd Premier League goal of the season, a new record for a 38 game season.

Haaland passes Mohamed Salah who set the record with 32 goals during the 2017-18 season. Quite a way for City to enter the driver's seat in the league. Arsenal may hang their heads after the match but entering the season, this was a team that would have been happy to finish in the top four. With Brighton's loss to Nottingham Forest, that goal has now been accomplished so now Arteta will look to finish the season on as strong a note as possible because while hope may be lost, the Gunners have not officially lost the title.

CBS Sports has a brand new daily soccer podcast, covering everything you need to know about the beautiful game. Make sure to give House of Champions a follow for coverage of the biggest games, stories, transfer news with Fabrizio Romano, and everything else going on in the world's most popular sport.

Big game Manchester City

If you give City an inch, they'll take a mile and Arsenal gave more than a few inches. It also takes excellence on City's part to take the chances in space they created. Haaland's passing has become underrated because he's so dangerous shooting the ball. He's not a selfish striker though, he's just usually in better positions than his teammates. But with de Bruyne being pushed up the pitch, City were happy to let Haaland create while de Bruyne ran into space because City has more than one player that can kill you by shooting the ball.

Defending a team like that is easier said than done and without William Saliba, it was a task that Arsenal weren't up to. Thomas Partey had a match to forget in midfield but he likely didn't expect to mark Haaland more than de Bruyne and that's a credit to Guardiola's gameplan. Finding a balance between outsmarting the opposition and overthinking things, this City team are hitting another gear when it matters most, and now their eyes are firmly set on the pursuit of a treble. It's now in their control, they just need to get over the line.

Where do Arsenal go from here?

While this was never a team expected to win the title, it's still disappointing to lose in this fashion and now extend their winless run to four games. First up for Arteta will be ending that slide next Tuesday against Chelsea. In the longer term, more midfielders are needed because while Granit Xhaka and Partey have been major cogs in a strong season, improvement is still needed especially as Partey is months away from joining Xhaka on the wrong side of 30. The team looked at Douglas Luiz and Moises Caciado in January and going back in for either could be a help especially since depth will be needed as they return to Champions League play.

Arsenal are a team ahead of schedule and that's not a bad thing as long as they can build upon what they've done. Title challenges and trophies should be the expectation from here on out as their biggest disappointment of the season isn't faltering in the title race, it's getting knocked out of Europa Leauge by Sporting CP. The club wants to return to being a world power and they've seen what one looks like up close more than once in Premier League play. They're on the right track but need to continue their trajectory. The squad is young and on fair contracts so there is plenty of room to build on.

City's path to clinching the title

The next seven days will be massive for Manchester City as they'll play one of their games in hand on Arsenal. An away trip to Fulham and a home clash with West Ham precede a tie with Leeds United that they'll probably need to rotate during as they balance a busy schedule before their Champions League semifinal showdown with Real Madrid. With a clean bill of health, rotation won't be an issue but they'll need to maintain focus with so many games to come. If they win out, they could be in a place to clinch the title on May 24th against Brighton and then rest players before the Manchester Derby in the FA Cup final. That date can move up if Arsenal drop points, but at the moment, Arsenal's maximum number of points is 90 compared to 94 for City.

What a game

City were dominant from start to finish to make sure that the match was never in doubt. Taking what was given to them, City had no issue scoring on the counter with Erling Haaland orchestrating the attack. Scoring his 33rd Premier League goal of the season, he has entered the record books but what's most important is that City are now in control their destiny as if they win out, they win the Premier League.

HAALAND IS INVITABLE! Record. Breaker.

Foden's on the pitch and Haaland hits the back of the net. It's his 33rd goal of the season and he now owns the record for most goals in the Premier League by a player in a 38 game season. He now has 49 goals in all competitions. An emphatic end to the match.

Consolation from Rob Holding!

Pep Guardiola won't be pleased by that but it's something that Arsenal can celebrate from what has been a very disappointing match.

There's a coming together

Emotion is beginning to boil over as Thomas Partey and Jack Grealish come together in the middle of the pitch. It was deescalated rather quickly.

One shot on goal

Arsenal has been playing for 70 minutes now and they've only tested Ederson once. It has been quite a beatdown by City as this match is over but the Gunners may be able to grab a consolation goal if City loses focus.

Outta sight, outta mind

Just when Arsenal gets a chance Kevin de Bruyne ends it. Again assisted by Haaland this ball had eyes to sneak by Ramsdale. City are putting an emphatic stamp on this game to leave no doubt.

Back underway

City doesn't even need to have a second half that was as good as their first half, they just need to manage the final 45 mintues. Eventually, Arsenal will need to throw everything forward in the match.

Stones scores!!!

Is that the game? After being ruled out for being offsides his goal will actually count following a VAR review. Arsenal thought they would enter the half only down a goal but after allowing the goal in stoppage time, Mikel Arteta has quite a halftime talk to deliver.

Pressure, coming down on me!

He'll want that back

Haaland usually finished those but drove his shot just wide after beating Gabriel in space. But despite the domination, it's still 1-0 to Arsenal so the game is certainly salvageable but the Gunners can't afford to concede a second goal. The game will now enter a slight stoppage after Thomas Partey went down with an apparent head injury.

Almost two for de Bruyne

On the dribble after being played in by Haaland again, the Belgian was blocked by Ben White at close range. Another City goal in the first half could end this match.

It's all City

Arsenal have had their slight chances to find space in possession but in the early going, it feels like City are the only team on the pitch. It's not even like Arsenal are making mistakes, City are just flexing what they can do on the pitch in controlling the game.

Jonathan Johnson's prediction for the match

Final result: 2-1. The general consensus is that both City and Arsenal score but that Guardiola's men come out on top by a goal or two. With two shouts for 2-1, another pair for 3-1 and one for a 1-1 draw, it is safe to say that our experts are unanimous in expecting goals. Given the crucial nature of the game in the Premier League title race, we will go for the tighter outcome.

A surprise team playing a part in the title race?

I had a chance to speak to Genk's technical director about the progression of Leandro Trossard and Kevin de Bruyne.

The club, currently leading the Belgian Pro League, is a unique place in the global landscape of soccer as a non-profit team that has to sell players on to survive. By investing funds into their academy, the club is able to ensure that they can stay competitive by helping players reach their potential but de Bruyne and Trossard are becoming models of their process as they're reaching the highest levels of the game.

"One of the first games where de Brunye came on the pitch, it was a friendly, and it was like he had eyes on his back. And he immediately, at the age of 17, he was pinging balls from one side to the other, 40-45 meters. Immediately you saw that he was different than the other ones," Genk technical director Dimitri de Conde told CBS Sports.

Andriy Shevchenko on Oleksandr Zinchenko

Previewing the match, James Benge dives into the Ukrainian defender's quality.

The first words Shevchenko uses to describe his compatriot? "Charisma, determination, responsibility."  It was a veteran Ukraine squad too. The side that drew at the Stade de France in a World Cup qualifier included the near 30 year old Serhiy Sydorchuk and experienced midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi, but it was Zinchenko who took the armband. "He has the passion [of a captain].

And what about the Arsenal side of things?

James Benge has the rundown

Biggest reason they'll win: Saka and Gabriel Martinelli will fancy their chances playing against full backs who may be excellent defenders but, based on how Guardiola has lined up in recent weeks, they are likely to be repurposed full backs. Those two cause merry havoc wherever they go and were the dominant performers as Arsenal overcame a two-goal deficit to draw with Southampton on Friday night. They betray no sense of fear on the biggest days, indeed they seem to relish them.

Biggest reason they'll lose: There are a lot. The simplest is that their players are not as good as their City counterparts. The cruelest might be that Rob Holding is just about to be bullied by Haaland. Arteta, however, would contend that the big problem is really individual errors of the sort that handed Kevin De Bruyne the opener when these two sides met at the Emirates Stadium. "You cannot give anything away," Arteta told CBS Sports in his pre-match press conference. "Against big teams they punish you straight away. That game, for many periods, we did really, really well and deserved much better. But again we had one or two moments that we gave them and the game was over."

How could the match go for Manchester City?

Looking at staff predictions, we broke down the possible outcomes

Biggest reason they'll win: Having Erling Haaland on your side certainly makes winning soccer matches easier. Even when the Norwegian doesn't score, his impact on the game due to his runs off the ball create so much space for his teammates. Part of that is due to the respect that must be given to a striker who has scored 48 goals in all competitions, but Haaland knows what he wants to do in a match and when he gets going, few can stop him.

Biggest reason they'll lose: If Nathan Ake isn't fit, the biggest question in the match is who will track Bukayo Saka. Aymeric Laporte would be the likely fill in but he's not as willing to go wide and lock down a winger as Ake has been in Guardiola's back three as of late. The defense can be susceptible to allowing chances on the counter attack and Arsenal are a team that manages those transitions well so if City allows the Gunners to turn the match into a track meet, it may not end well for them.
