WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chakowby Hicks scored a team-high 16 points to lead Norfolk State to a 64-54 win over Howard University Saturday.
Hicks, a senior guard from the District of Columbia, scored eight of his points in the first half for the Spartans (8-7, 6-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Norfolk State took a 29-18 lead at the half, and Hicks' off-balance 30 foot shot at the buzzer gave his team some momentum.
The Spartans went on to extend their lead to 15 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half. But Howard (5-10, 2-4) fought its way back into the game with the help of Will Gant who scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half. Freshman walk-on Reggie Bates added all of his 13 points after the half as well.
Bates narrowed the Howard deficit to three points, but it didn't last. Howard hit some trouble with Jason Trotter and Daniel Wright fouling out.
