STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State got a win and a record Tuesday night. What the 12th-ranked Cowboys really wanted was a sterner test as they prepped for the Big 12 Conference.
Mario Boggan scored a career-high 36 points and JamesOn Curry added 31 as Oklahoma State set a school scoring record in a 129-77 rout of Southwestern Oklahoma State.
The injury-depleted Cowboys used only a seven-man rotation against NCAA Division II Southwestern, as starting guard Terrel Harris missed the game with what coach Sean Sutton said was a non-sports-related eye injury suffered over the weekend.
Oklahoma State (14-1) posted its first 100-point game since Jan. 30, 2005, when the Cowboys beat Colorado 104-86, and broke the previous school record of 127 points, set Dec. 3, 1977, against Santa Fe.
The Cowboys will open conference play Saturday at home against Baylor.
"It was a game that ... didn't really help us at all as far as getting ready for a game against Baylor on Saturday that will be an entirely different game," Oklahoma State assistant coach Jimmy Williams said.
This is the third straight season the Cowboys have played an in-state small-college opponent, with Southwestern (10-1) receiving a $10,000 guarantee. Even with the loss, the Bulldogs are 6-5 all-time against Oklahoma State, with the previous 10 games being played from 1917 to 1938.
Oklahoma State never trailed, although the Bulldogs -- who entered averaging 93.1 points per game -- managed keep their deficit to single digits for most of the first 11 minutes.
As the game progressed, though, the Cowboys' advantage in size and speed became more and more obvious. Oklahoma State scored 11 straight points in a 98-second first-half burst to turn a 10-point lead into a 21-point advantage, and the Cowboys led 57-29 at halftime.
Oklahoma State extended its lead to as many as 52 points. The Cowboys passed the 100-point mark on a three-point play by Boggan with 6:41 left.
The Cowboys shot 63.8 percent from the field, made 34 of 41 free throws, blocked 11 shots and outrebounded Southwestern 54-28. Two Southwestern players fouled out, both by the 9:42 mark, and the Bulldogs went 9-of-11 from the free-throw line while shooting 34.9 percent from the field.
David Monds finished with 18 points for the Cowboys, while Byron Eaton added 15, Marcus Dove 13 and Kenny Cooper 11.
Ryan Mann had 15 points for the Bulldogs, while Eric Payne and Jose Garcia both had 11.
"I wish we could have played a little bit better with them," Southwestern coach Todd Thurman said. "But that's OK. I think they got what they needed out of it."
Not according to Williams.
"From a coaching standpoint, this really wasn't a game that helped us a lot," Williams said. "Sometimes, in a game like this, you start to get into bad habits. We were going so easy and, defensively, we kind of took it lightly on the rotation to the weak side. They drove a few times. They scored 77 points and we really thought that was too many."
Oklahoma State's margin of victory and point total were partially due to Sutton's lack of substitution options. Oklahoma State has only nine scholarship players and Sutton wants to redshirt the Cowboys' two walk-ons. Freshman Obi Muonelo broke his ankle earlier this season, and Harris' absence left the Cowboys with a particularly thin bench.
Cooper, a sophomore center, made his second start of the season, with Monds and former walk-on Tyler Hatch coming off the bench.
"I guess other people would be upset, but you understand the situation," Thurman said. "He had no choice. ... I was worried sick that something was going to happen to one of his kids. Thank God they got out of it and they can go to Baylor."
Curry said the Cowboys did learn one lesson after tempers on both sides flared at times during the second half.
"Keep a cool head," he said. "Maybe later on, you'll be in a physical game, and you need to keep your head, because we're limited on the bench, so everything is magnified, regardless of whether it's against Southwestern Oklahoma State or a Big 12 team."
Harris had started every game for Oklahoma State this season, averaging 11.5 points and 4.1 rebounds. He has a non-displaced orbital rim and floor fracture, according to consulting doctor Donald Crawley. Crawley said he did not think Harris' injury would require surgery, but it would be re-evaluated once the swelling lessens.
Harris' availability for the Cowboys' game against Baylor is uncertain, although Williams said that he thinks Harris will be able to play.
