PHOENIX -- The San Diego Padres' long-shot hope to win the NL wild-card race ended between the second and third innings of Friday night's game against Arizona.

Then Miguel Ojeda helped briefly lift their spirits.

Ojeda hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the seventh, and the Padres, knocked out of the playoff race when Houston beat Colorado, rallied for a win over the Diamondbacks.

"Just because we're done doesn't mean that we want to lose," Ojeda said. "We want to have good at-bats. Jake Peavy still wants to pitch. He's still going to stay on his game and try to win the game for us."

Peavy worked six innings to put himself in position to become the first Padre since Randy Jones in 1975 to win the NL ERA title. He needed 1 2/3 innings to qualify.

Peavy's final ERA of 2.27 is the lowest in the major leagues.

"I'd gladly turn in that title and care less about individual numbers if we had a shot to play in the postseason and win the championship," Peavy said. "There's no doubt everybody in here is disheartened, a lot of sadness going around."

Peavy (15-6) gave up two runs on four hits, walking one. He struck out a career high-tying 11 for the second time in the last two weeks. His 15 wins in his second full season set a career high.

"Peavy is really nasty every day, and his numbers prove it," Arizona's Shea Hillenbrand said. "He's going to be a great pitcher. The only thing with him, like every other pitcher, is to stay healthy."

Antonio Osuna worked two perfect innings in relief, and Trevor Hoffman earned his 41st save in 45 chances.

Hoffman gave up a two-out triple to Doug DeVore, but held on when Chris Snyder lined out to Xavier Nady in left field.

Nady had a solo homer for the Padres in the second.

Hillenbrand had three of the Diamondbacks' five hits, including a two-run shot in the sixth.

But starter Michael Gosling (1-1) allowed Ojeda's 417-foot drive to center, his first homer since Aug. 14 and San Diego's fourth pinch-hit home run this year.

"Sometimes they make you look good," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "Ojeda did tonight. He'll be catching tomorrow while some guys get some time off."

The Diamondbacks (49-111) moved into a tie for the eighth-most losses in major league history. They have dropped 12 of 17 against San Diego this year, including four in a row.

Gosling gave up three runs on seven hits and four walks in six innings. It was his first major league loss.

"He just made that one mistake against Ojeda," Arizona manager Al Pedrique said. "Left a fastball up."

Notes

Peavy retired 11 of the first 12 batters. He also fanned 11 on Sept. 22 of this year and April 3, 2003, both times against Los Angeles. ... The 1932 Boston Red Sox, 1939 St. Louis Browns, 1941 Philadelphia Phillies and 1963 New York Mets also lost 111 games. ... Peavy is 8-3 in his last 12 starts. ... The Padres have taken consecutive season series against Arizona for the first time.
