Orioles beat champs for fifth consecutive victory

BOSTON -- The Baltimore Orioles are ready to challenge New York and Boston in the AL East.

Miguel Tejada's fourth hit of the game was a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning as Baltimore beat the Red Sox 11-8 on Tuesday night. Winners of five straight, the Orioles have not been in first place this late in the season since 1997.

"We're supposed to have no chance against the Yankees and Red Sox," said Baltimore reliever Steve Kline, who pitched for the NL champion St. Louis Cardinals last year. "And look at what they've done."

Javier Lopez also hit a two-run homer in the eighth off to hand Red Sox closer Keith Foulke (1-3) his first blown save this season. Melvin Mora had four of Baltimore's 20 hits and Rafael Palmeiro had three as the Orioles rallied from a five-run deficit.

"We stopped hitting and they didn't," Red Sox center fielder Johnny Damon said. "They're playing with a lot of confidence right now, and they're on a roll."

Manny Ramirez had three hits, including a three-run homer, and Damon had a pair of doubles as Boston scored five times in the second and three in the fourth to open leads of 5-1 and 8-3. But Matt Clement gave back most of the lead before Foulke (1-3) came in.

Foulke, who fielded the final out in Boston's World Series-clinching victory, allowed four runs and four hits in one inning as the Red Sox lost for the fourth time in five games.

"It's a heartache to lose the way we did," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "He's our guy, and he's going to continue to be our guy."

Jorge Julio (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out two. B.J. Ryan pitched the ninth for his third save.

The game came five days after the same two starters -- Matt Clement and Rodrigo Lopez -- met in a 1-0 duel that the Red Sox won on a second-inning error.

The sequel couldn't have been more different.

"It's hard to face the same guys back-to-back," said Kline, who pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings. "Guys are still fresh in your memory."

Lopez, who took the loss in Baltimore on Thursday despite allowing just one unearned run, lasted 3 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs, seven hits and four walks while striking out three. His ERA ballooned from 1.91 to 3.98.

Clement, who scattered eight hits over eight shutout innings last time, gave up 12 hits on Tuesday night before leaving in the fifth with two out, two on and two already in.

"Believe me, I wanted him to stay in," Francona said. "I was dying for him to stay out there and get five innings. I think if you start managing with your heart more than your head, you get in trouble."

Larry Bigbie doubled off Alan Embree to drive in the two inherited runners and make it 8-7. Clement was charged with seven runs and a walk, striking out one and leaving just one out before he would have qualified for the win.

It turned out to be long forgotten by the time Foulke took the mound in the eighth, still protecting an 8-7 lead. After Mora doubled, Tejada hit an 0-2 pitch over the Green Monster to give Baltimore a 9-8 lead.

Sammy Sosa flied out to center, Palmeiro singled and Lopez hit a two-run homer down the left-field line.

Notes

  • Everyone in both starting lineups had a hit except Boston 1B Kevin Millar.
  • The Red Sox placed LHP David Wells on the disabled list and said he might miss a month or more. Wells sprained his foot in Monday night's game. He will not have surgery. LHP Lenny DiNardo was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his place on the roster.
  • DH David Ortiz hit his 200th career double in the second inning.
