Hudson goes distance as D-Backs down Padres

PHOENIX -- The purple, white and teal still suit Lyle Overbay.

With the Arizona Diamondbacks wearing 2001 replica uniforms to celebrate their only World Series championship, Overbay had a throwback kind of day of his own.

A seldom-used veteran who made his major league debut with the Diamondbacks in September 2001, Overbay hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning Friday night to help Arizona win its franchise record 14th straight home game, 3-2 over the San Diego Padres.

"I felt a little younger, I guess," the 34-year-old Overbay said of wearing familiar colors.

Overbay's hit drove in Aaron Hill, who led off the eighth with a walk against reliever Chad Qualls (6-7), a Diamondback in 2010.

Overbay was with Arizona through the 2003 season but he returned after being released by Pittsburgh in August.

The Diamondbacks, winners of 15 of 17 overall, matched Cleveland for longest home winning streak this season. The Indians won 14 straight from April 3 to May 10.

Hudson (16-9) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and struck out seven. He gave up a leadoff double to Jesus Guzman in the ninth but stranded pinch runner Aaron Cunningham at third base.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he toyed with the intense Hudson about taking him out of the game earlier, but Hudson said "he always does that."

"He just tries to get under my skin sometimes," Hudson said, "but there was no way I was coming out of that game."

Padres starter Mat Latos, who has some of the worst run support in the NL, lasted seven innings and struck out eight, allowing two runs on eight hits.

"One thing [manager] Buddy [Black] stresses is throwing your off-speed for strikes I was able to mix and match pitches," Latos said.

The Padres took the lead in the top of the third. Alberto Gonzalez led off by reaching on a throwing error by Diamondbacks shortstop Willie Bloomquist, which allowed Gonzalez to take second base. With one out, Will Venable singled sharply to right field, and the throw home by right fielder Justin Upton beat Gonzalez but was up the line, forcing catcher Montero to miss the sweep tag.

Upton was back in the lineup a day after being lifted in the seventh inning due to effects of an illness. Gibson thought Upton looked sluggish trotting around the bases after his home run in the sixth inning of Thursday night's win over the Padres. After Upton was intentionally walked in the seventh, Gibson lifted him for a pinch-runner.

In the sixth Friday, San Diego added to its lead with a leadoff double from Jason Bartlett, a sacrifice by Cameron Maybin and Jesus Guzman's sacrifice fly, a stroke of good fortune for the NL West's last-place team as Guzman reached out with the bat to make contact for the flyball.

Upton drilled a 3-1 pitch from Latos over the wall in left field for a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, his 30th of the season. Montero followed with a single to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, but Latos struck out Ryan Roberts and got some help when Overbay's line drive toward first struck Montero for an automatic out.

"I'm not trying to do too much," Upton said. "Our confidence is there and we're confident going late into the game that we can scratch something across if the game's close."

The Diamondbacks trailed 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh, when Chris Young led off with a double and scored on Gerardo Parra's triple. Latos struck out Hudson, and Padres left fielder Kyle Blanks threw out Parra trying to score on a line drive out to end the inning.

Notes

  • There was a brief delay in the top of the seventh inning Friday after Hudson appeared to lose his footing coming off the mound on a follow through, and groundskeepers were called out to pack the dirt.
