PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Rickie Weeks and the Milwaukee Brewers ended Seattle's 10-game winning streak. Kendrys Morales and Michael Morse kept up the Mariners' spring power display.
Seattle's winning string had been its longest ever in spring training. The Mariners lead the majors with 26 home runs in 12 games, and have connected for multiple homers in nine straight.
"You could say it's spring, you could say whatever, but you still have to hit the ball, you still have to play the game," Morse said. "Half of the way we're playing is because the guys are relaxed, confident and they're believing in their abilities. Everybody's playing within their abilities. So it's something that we have to remember, bottle up and carry over to the season."
The Mariners led 6-3 when both teams' regulars were replaced. The Brewers scored four runs with backups and minor leaguers in the seventh and eighth innings.
Mike Fiers, who was 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA in 22 starts for Milwaukee last season, went 3 1-3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits in his longest outing of spring training.
"Maybe not ideal what I'd do during the year, throwing everything in the first inning, but it's spring training," Fiers said. "I'm working on things, getting pitches where I want them."
Fiers said his goal is to pitch 200 innings this season after combining for almost 180 at Triple-A Nashville and the Brewers last season.
Two Mariners pitchers competing for spots at the back end of the starting rotation, Blake Beavan and Erasmo Ramirez, pitched three innings each. Beavan allowed three runs on six hits and Ramirez shut out the Brewers on one hit.
"He used all of his pitches and his stuff's pretty impressive," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said of Ramirez. "Still working on a couple of things just to tighten up his game a little bit."
Left-hander Charlie Furbush, who figures to be part of the Seattle bullpen this season, gave up the go-ahead run in the eighth.
NOTES: The Mariners send ace Felix Hernandez to the mound for his first big league start of spring training on Thursday against Kansas City in Surprise, Ariz. Hernandez will pitch in a split-squad game and is scheduled to go two innings. He has already thrown in a simulated game and live batting practice. ... Former Mariners stars Ken Griffey Jr. and Jay Buhner arrived at spring training this week to serve as advisers in minor league camp. ... The Brewers are scheduled to start the following pitchers Thursday through Sunday: RHP Mark Rogers vs. Arizona, RHP Tyler Thornburg vs. Texas, RHP Willy Peralta vs. Cincinnati and LHP Chris Narveson vs. San Francisco. ... Brewers 1B Mat Gamel is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday in Scottsdale, Ariz., for a torn right ACL suffered in the first full-squad workout of spring training. He is expected to miss the season.
