Alex Avila's up-and-down tenure as the Tigers starting catcher ended on an especially low note. He hit just .191 and missed extensive time with loose bodies in his knee. The injury isn't much of an excuse, though, considering his batting average has declined now in four straight seasons, during which he has hit only .224. He still homers and walks more than the average catcher, but he doesn't make enough contact for it to amount to anything. The 28-year-old gets one more chance to stick as a starter this year after inking a one-year deal with the White Sox, who also brought in the dependable Dioner Navarro as a backup. The way Avila has trended the last couple years, he's just a desperation pick in two-catcher leagues.
